A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews)

Shalom Y'all. I was just wondering...there are so many people who seem to know nothing at all about Judaism or Jews. Not trying to offend anyone here, but I was just wondering...Have you ever had someone ask you really ignorant questions about Judaism? I have. For example:
I have been asked numerous times if I am 'Hebrew' and once was asked if I am "Israel."
In World History last year, we were talking about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and it was referred to as the conflict between the "Israelites and the Pakistanis." I have heard 'Israelites' used for 'Iraelis' more times than I care to count.
I have been asked numerous times if I speak 'Israel' and 'Jewish.'
This is my favorite one: one of my friends was once asked if she spoke 'Dreydle.' Hoo boy I love that one!
Please share your stories!

I am afraid I dont speak Dreydl. But I do speak Menorah. Elphie, there are always going to be ignorant people in this world. Remember, ignorance is bliss but only for the ignorant. People are ignoirant not because they are against you, but because they are not enlightened. I once had someone ask me if the Jewish G-d was different from the the " real G-d"

"Friends are the people you chose as family."....Me.

No worries. I'm sure most people in the world would find me horribly ignorant about their culture as well. But coming from a half Jewish town, I admit found it pretty startling when people in my regional high school asked if I spoke Hebrish. re: A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews)

Man people are such idiots! My favorite book of the Hebrew scriptures is Torah. Torah was such an amazing woman, she single handedly made sure Abraham had milk and honey every day since Sarah was worthless! Very few of us Christians know that Sarah couldn't cook so God sent Torah as a servant because men shouldn't have to do any housework or cooking for themselves!re: A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews)

LOL

Well I've had people ask me whether we rode camels to school here in Israel.....I'm not kidding.

A lot of people assume that because I am Jewish I am from Israel or have a dual US-Israeli citizenship. I can understand why they would think that, though.

My father's Jewish, my mother's Catholic and I was baptized Episcopalian to get into my elementry school for cheaper tution
I consider myself religiously screwed up
but here's a typical converstion I have with folks
Folks: Are you Jewish?
Me: Why?
Folks: You look Jewish
I never know quite how to respond to that re: A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews)

I'm not Jewish so I don't know much, but Isreal is not really considered a country, right? Or is it? Isn't this the reason over this middle-east conflict....that the Jews left the area and the the muslims moved in and then the Jews wanted it back?

Israel is a country, recognized by everyone but a few Arab countries. Jews got the land from the UN after WWII, in an idea derived somewhat from Britain's Balfour Declaration of WWI. Palestinians are the ones with no official state, and the borders and administration of that state are what everyone keeps fighting about. The whole area used to be a British colony.

Basically, Israel got all the surrounding Arab countries to recognize them by kicking their asses repeatedly over the years.

"State of Israel" doesn't mean anything about its legal status relative to other nations. After all, we're the "United States of America." No "country" or "state" there. It's like the difference between a "town," "municipality," and "city" - it means nothing.

Alix, you don't by any chance go to Solomon Schechter, do you?

People always say to me: "You don't LOOK Jewish"! What does Jewish LOOK like? Just cause I am blonde and blue doesn't mean I am automatically not Jewish!
It started with a sipmle idea, collecting one paper clip for every life lost, the feelings that connect us...are greater than those that divide us!

There's no such thing as a certain Jewish "look" - it's just that Jews have been stereotyped as the Ashkenazi type- eastern European, big nose, blah blah blah. That leaves out a ton of people, including Ethiopian Jews and Sephardis. Not to mention those who are mixed, like me. :)

re: A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews)

It's all in how you're raised and what you're taught. One of my aunts and one of my uncles are jewish so I was raised pretty well informed. I also went to Catholic school and we were taught quite a bit about Judism (forgive me if I've butchered the spelling of that -- I'm sure I must have)....

As with anything else, you pretty much know what you're taught.

If it weren't for me studying Judaism and the Israelite culture (yes, -ite, not the current country, they didn't write the Torah re: A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews) ), then my perception of Christianity would be just as skewed and uninformed as, well, the rest of the country. Damn, that just made me really sad. re: A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews)
I had a great Rabbi teach me all the stuff that priests and pastors and ministers THINK they understand...but don't. Stick to the New Testament guys. re: A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews)
Word. Word, indeed.

I know what you mean about being sheltered, Alix- growing up here, where practically everyone is Jewish, it never even occured to me to wonder about it being abnormal or unique. Of course, we studied about our people's history and all, but it seemed very far away from me until I grew up a little and started travelling. I remember the first time I felt like a minority- it was in the United States, actually- and it was a really weird feeling.

Oh- and I live in a suburb of Tel-Aviv, right in the middle of Israel, called Ramat-Hasharon. re: A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews)

re: A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews)

I'm a pretty religious Jew who goes to a Jewish schoo, so I don't really have too many encounter with Non-Jews. I've been asked what kosher is and why I can't eat ham, and I'm always asked if I could speak Hebrew, but there aren't really many stupid questions I've been asked about Judaism. But a kid once called me a kike because I was Jewish, but that was when I was 7.

re: A Question for my fellow Jews (and non-Jews)

This is kind of random, but this summer I went to an International Jewish Summer Camp in Hungary. It was an amazing experience, but I learned waaaaay too much about anti-Semitism. I had never realized that it is still so prevalent in Europe. I mean, I met kids whose friends had been beaten up and a girl whose parents didn't tell her she was Jewish until last year. I never realized how bad it is. However, it was realy nice to be in a place where everyone was Jewish and I didn't have to explain myself to people.
