They think you are special and get a discount early
On my 49th birthday this year I received my application from AARP. I was not amused!

I have been receiving stuff from them since I was 49. Every time I see their return address on some thing I say "Give it up, already!"
Makes you wonder, with all these mailings, how much of their funds go to their actually cause.
They sent me a "Welcome" notice the week before my 50th birthday. I wasn't depressed until *that* showed up in the mailbox.
it sounds like aarp's stalking service is more effective than beacon!

I turned 50 last month which I still can't believe since I feel like a young pup. The dues are so cheap, I figure that If I get one or two good discounts, its worth it.
The darkest day was when I was on the way home from work, carrying my gym bag and a bag from 'The Garden of Eden' which contained two salmon fillets and a pint of strawberries. At Atlantic Avenue, a seat opened up on the subway. A young woman of 23 looked at me and said "You've got a bag sir, would you like to sit down?" Mortified, I declined the offer.

I refuse to join AARP on the grounds that I'm not mature enough. I'd die if I ever used their ID card to get a discount.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm late for my facelift.
Hey, for MY midlife crisis, I pierced my nose! And I don't even regret it.
I don't care how good the discounts are, either, their mail remains unopened.
been an AARP member since I turned 49, great discounts, definately worth it to me........
I'm under 40 too...and have been getting applications for AARP since my dad co-signed a car loan for me over 10 years ago. I don't mind those so much as I mind the offers from "The Scooter Store" and the "EZ Lift chair system". And if I get one more piece of mail reminding me to register and pick my medicare plan! I just want to scream..."I'm 34! Stop it!"
I've been an AARP member for quite a while and I also have no problem at all in using their discounts!
My darkest moment came when I received their monthly magazine with Paul McCartney on the cover. My first trip to NY took place when I was 15 and I came with a group of other teenagers to see the Beatles at Shea. I had seen them the week before in DC and had screamed Paul's name so loud that I completely lost my voice. It didn't stop me - I continued screaming a silent 'Paul' while the Shea concert was going on!
When I turned 50, I joined.
Baby, I've EARNED those discounts!

Exactly P.J., I think of all the people I know that never made it to 50. They would've loved those discounts and time on the earth as well.
I got a membership card in the mail at 22. It was obviously some kind of error.
Wexy, that was what I was thinking but didn't say....
Here's to them!
jerseygirl, maybe you looked 50 then? (Joking)

I'm a proud member of AARP and love getting the discounts at various places!
Ya know, I guess that could have been the case. I lived alone with 5 cats. (not really)

I'm glad I made it to my 40's. Not sure I want to make it to my 80's, but of course that's not my choice...

To me age is nothing. After all, it is just a number. I turn 49 next month and I am doing so with immense pride. When I turn 50 next year, I will gladly join AARP. Their magazine is wonderful and actually can appeal to all ages. Then of course there are those wonderful discounts! DollyPop seems to enjoy being a member........after all he has been one for over 25 years.
I love this thread! why? I never knew so many of the posters were in my generation! I don't feel so bad now.
I'm still throwing away all aarp mail though. I guess I'm still in denial. I can't believe how often I receive mail from them.
