Late last night, I thought we'd awaken to a real storm about Palin's as the palid selection, and by tomorrow, she'd be gone.

I was dead wrong.

It's not so much that they don't want to abandon a distraction in their week ... she's raising money. People have donated more since she was crazy-glued to the ticket Friday. Apparently, the "fired up" evangelicals and the fuller coffers transcend a litany of "what was he thinking?" questions being asked by many inside the party.

What will this nation be thinking if they honestly embrace this woman as a viable candidate? Will this mean every aggressive member of the town counsel in Anywhere, USA can aspire to the highest offer in the land? And make a serious play for it? Experience, wisdom, education be damned? Probably. In a country that damns candidates for being head of the Harvard Law Review as "pointy headed" and praises another for being "a mom -- just like me" anything is possible.

I thought it was either way it's not very Republican.... I think it's also a violation of international law.

ANWR, ANWR and ANWR!!!

That's what she brings to the table. Drilling will commence in record time if she moves into the West Wing. I'm not opposed to drilling there either but under the circumstances I'd like Pelosi et al to demand troop withdrawal from Iraq as a precursor.

And if Pelosi can't broker such a deal on the house side it's time to oust her azz as well.

Let's not forget that evangelicals of all political stripes have seen off many sons and daughters to Iraq as well. The ones in the GOP camp just don't trust the Muslim and the Catholic when it comes to prosecuting the war (sorry, but I had to go there).

It's sickening but with Palin onboard it becomes the worst case scenario, a "Holy War". Now, that's what has me shaking in my Rockports.

Oh, that horrible, horrible U.S.! Throwing away all that money, giving it to places like....Wassila!

Excerpted from Salon.com:

What really amazes me is that the states always complaining about the oppressive, big-spending federal government also seem to be the same ones with their lips securely and cheerily fastened to the federal teat. With the exception of Maryland and Virginia -- which, by virtue of proximity to the nation's capital, have many federal employees, military or otherwise -- many of the states that most benefit from the net difference between taxes paid to Washington and federal outlays from Washington are the poorer and/or Southern states. That is: red states.

And guess which state is perennially near the top of the list? According to the Tax Foundation, which tracks such things, Alaska ranked among the top 6 in per capita federal receipts for each of the past seven years (1999-2005) for which the foundation reports data. (The link starts, alphabetically, on Alabama -- another major teat sucker, a top 10 recipient every year since 1990! -- but just click the arrow in the top right once to reach the Alaska page.)

Surely Sarah Palin rejects such largess, right? Wrong. According to the Washington Post:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin employed a lobbying firm to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents while she was its mayor, according to an analysis by an independent government watchdog group.

There was $500,000 for a youth shelter, $1.9 million for a transportation hub, $900,000 for sewer repairs, and $15 million for a rail project -- all intended to benefit Palin's town, Wasilla, located about 45 miles north of Anchorage.

BTW, when you divide 6,700 into $27M, that works out to more than $4,000 per person.

Rugged individualism, self-reliance, freedom from the feds ... the Alaskan way! Whatevs.

It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali
