No horror and no musicals, either. Hm. The two most difficult genres to master and they're left out. Typical AFI popularity contest.

EDIT

Of course SCHINDLER'S LIST is above GONE WITH THE WIND for PC's sake.

I disagreed with a few of their choices and placements...but was FURIOUS there was no horror genre!

I'd take "Lion King" out of the top ten and add Little Mermaid as #10 for starters.

"Judgement at Nuremberg" would be much higher.

"Groundhog Day"?

"Vertigo" would not be in my top ten.

WHERE is 'The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly'? One of the greatest westerns, genre films, hell, one of the greatest films PERIOD of all time, and they won't list it? MAN that's disappointing. XP

And why wouldn't they do Horror or Musicals? It's really not that hard. Dammit, why are my favourite genres always missed off these things? re: AFI's 10 Top 10

I watched it last night. Some of these movies I have never seen or heard of, so I can't comment on them. But, what really surprises me is how "Citizen Kane" is not on any list. Or does it just not fit into any category listed? I mean, some are obvious. I just thought they would have to include it somehow, since apparently on the original top 100 list, and the new one from last year, it was #1.

And the animated list, I think it is really interesting how the only non Disney related one is "Shrek." I still don't understand why that is on the list. Same with "Toy Story." Oh well, at least "Fantasia," my second favorite Disney movie, got included.

And I am happy that "Roman Holiday" was included on the Romantic Comedy list. That is another really good movie.

The only real surprise is City Lights being the #1 romcom.

Citizen Kane would likely be on a "Drama" list... but hey, there's no Drama category either!

Yet, they have Courtroom Drama... a boob-tube favorite.

This was about creating a TV special and getting ratings, way more than it was about generating reputable lists.

I still say they're better than most... but I'm not sure how much that's saying in the long run.

Very true. If it were up to me, I would have definitely included musicals.

For some reason, I find it sort of funny that "Titanic" was included too. It was good the first 2 or 3 times, but that's it. Parts of it are very cheesy too.

I disliked Titanic when it was first released. It's very poorly written.
Some of my favorites are on the various lists, but I feel that listing To Kill a Mockingbird as a 'courtroom drama' cheapens that movie. It's a whole lot more than that.

I'd add CABARET to your musicals list best, but I agree pretty much otherwise.

I do find it odd there is no drama, musical, or horror category. I'd consider those very definitive genres, moreso than something like courtroom drama.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Oh besty! You can not leave off Night Of The Living Dead!!

I would also add Alien (although some would call it sci-fi)
and The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari.

I guess they left off all the categories they already did- that's why there's no musicals and no comedy or drama.

My brother pointed out an oddity: some of these films are on the AFI 100 Greatest Films list in opposite order than they're on here. As in, Butch Cassidy is #50 and Unforgiven is #98, yet on this list Unforgiven is rated higher. Doesn't make much sense.

The animation list is HORRIBLE. And I can't believe Star Wars is on the list when Empire Strikes Back isn't. Everyone and their mom knows that ESB is the best Star Wars film.
