Has anyone here kept their money with AFCU?
Do you like it? Would you recommend it?
Any thoughts on advantages of a credit union over a bank?
Thanks, guys.

Highly recommended.
As to the advantage of a credit union over a bank? Credit unions aren't money-grubbing bastards.

Their website is pretty informative, take some time to check it out.

Plus, I was able to get a new laptop by taking out a loan from them. They've always been GREAT to deal with. Plus (ATM-wise), any McDonald's ATM is free. It can be a hassle to go there every time you have to cash a check, or what have you. But the customer service is great and it's fun to run into Tony winners while making a deposit!

I live in Connecticut, so it would be difficult for me to get to AFCU's actual branches on a regular basis. Can you do deposits through the mail (like Charles Schwab)?
Someone told me that all credit unions are sort of related. Could I make a deposit at a non AFCU credit union? Or am I way off base?

I used to bank with AFCU but I found it incredibly inconvenient. You can do mail deposits but you can't make ATM deposits and since there are only 2 branch locations making a deposit in person was often a pain since I live in Queens. They have a system where you can make deposits to your account at Pay-O-Matic check cashing places around the 5 boroughs but many times when I tried to utilize that option the machines would be down.
Once my debit card was somehow cloned and someone was able to withdraw several thousand dollars over the course of a night by going to multiple ATMs. AFCU would not do anything about it until I went and filed a police report and brought them a copy. When I brought them the police report I then had to fill out a separate form for every transaction including one for each of the individual ATM withdrawal fees that were incurred by the thieves going from ATM to ATM to withdraw the maximum amount allowed. I must have filled out 30 forms. I was able to get everything back but only after an incredible amount of hassle and an entire day of leg work on my part. The ordeal left me with no cash on hand or access to money for nearly 4 days.
