"I never saw his sex videos so I just watch an interminable 20 minutes from a bondage movie called REDDER. They sure don't make em like they used to, do they? I couldn't figure out what emotion(s) he was trying to play. He was similar to Katharine McPhee in many ways."

Your not looking at the right film. He might not be your type. But the man is very talented.

"Not trying to pick a fight, but it did have attributes usually used to define a cult. Charismatic leader/guru to whom most of the wealth flowed; arcane insider lingo; emphasis on recruiting others into the program; nebulous goals ("getting it"), encouraging members to associate with other members and ignore friends or relatives not interested in signing up; sleep deprivation (or was it potty deprivation?) at weekend seminars."

Not looking for an argument either. It's just that it wasn't my experience. I never felt pressured by anyone, was never encouraged to ignore friends and relatives not interested in signing up (in fact, that would be in direct opposition to what they teach -- putting yourself on a pedestal and believing that you're better than anyone else. Did they try to recruit members? Well… yes. But not any more so than any other organization, religious or otherwise. Personally, I think every organized religion can be accused of being a cult. But I never thought of EST as a religion. And, for the record, it wasn't sleep deprivation they were accused of, it was not allowing you to go to the bathroom. A gross over exaggeration. Anyway... to each his own. If it WAS a cult, it was one of the least successful cults of all time. Although, I agree with you about its founder, Werner Erhard. I believe he was caught with his hand in the cookie jar, or tax invasion, or some such thing. I never paid him much attention or found him particularly appealing or charismatic. I certainly didn't worship him. So it really didn't matter much to me at the time. Besides, at that point I had moved on and was no longer actively involved. P.S. If you want to see a really humorous spoof on EST, watch the Burt Reynolds/Kris Kristofferson movie, Semi-Tough.

Anyway... getting back to the topic at hand. This was a tragic double-suicide and a sad reminder of what inequality, injustice and being treated like a second-class citizen can do to one's psyche. Sadly, had they just hung on for a few more months, their story might have had a very different ending.
