I watched Alien again last night and forgot how great the film is. I will absolutely add this back into my film repertoire. I could only imagine how great seeing this film on the big screen was back in 1979. Anyone else feel the same way?
Even though it had its fair amount of gore, it was basically a cat and mouse game. The chest buster scene is a film classic.

I saw it the night it opened in 1979.
You have a film repertoire?
Meaning the films I watch again every few months. Though I was in high school when it was released, the closest movie theatre was located about 40 miles away. I just stopped by Target and picked up a copy of Aliens and looking forward to watching it tonight.
A classic film.
A game changer in both the sci-fi and horror genres and so influential that it's still being copied today.
I got to watch it and Aliens in a double-header at one of the indie theatres downtown. So amazing. (I took a friend who had NEVER SEEN EITHER, which was pretty great.)

I was able to see it on the big screen a few years ago at a midnight showing. That movie was meant to be on the big screen. I loved how the first Alien was really all about suspense and atmosphere.
Spoilers
I always thought the film should have ended with Ripley entering hyper sleep, but just before she doses off, she sees the Alien and can't do anything about it as her eyes close. I have no problems with the current ending, but from what I remember, it is pretty much the same ending as Aliens (with the xenomorph shot out the air lock).

even if one loves aliens, one has to confess that it is literally alien on steroids. the final act, in particular, is lifted from alien scene-for-scene, but with everything amped up. i.e., a by-the-skin-of-your-teeth escape from a nuclear explosion, a bigger-badder xenomorph slipping on board the escape craft, ripley slipping into a bigger-and-badder suit, a bigger-and-badder mano-e-mano with the xenomorph, culminating with blasting it out the airlock and everyone going beddy-bye at the end.
The plot is identical to a 60's D movie "It, The Terror From Beyond Space"
I remember seeing it on the big screen when there was an anniversary screening 5 years ago in my area. Everybody knew about the chest-burster scene and was prepared but it was the Ash revelation that actually drew audible gasps.
I loved Aliens. They so missed the boat not making a sequel starring the adult kick-ass Newt.

I agree. Alien3, though highly entertaining, cheapened Aliens and the Ripley character.
I was thinking last night about a modern day cast for a theoretical Alien remake (I don't want it to happen). Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong'o, Vera Farmiga, and Emily Blunt came to mind for Ripley.
