This just in! Dianne Feinstein, who had previously refused to have anything to do with a filibuster, just issued a statement:

"Based on a very long and thoughtful analysis of the record and transcript, which I tried to indicate in my floor statement yesterday, I've decided that I will vote no on cloture."

No on cloture = Yes to filibuster

gee, if they don't filibuster alito after having raged against the dying of the light lo these last weeks, how on earth will they manage to get the country to take them seriously when they do decide to filibuster? like say if stevens eats some of annie's creme brulee and dubya decides to nominate janice rodgers brown?

but really? leaving the party? is that a real threat or just one of those things like alec baldwin threatening to leave the country? maybe those disaffected by their senators'lackluster performance on this issue could start their own party...please...pretty please with sugar on top? i'll even help.

Just called and left a message for Harry Reid. Told him I'd be leaving the party unless he supported the filibuster.

Forgot to tell him that I'm still a registered Republican, though...

Salazar's DC voice mail is full, and the circuits are busy on his CO line. I guess he's getting LOTS of calls...all saying FILIBUSTER!

I'm from an area impacted by Senator Byrd, and I can safely say we've been ashamed of him for years. He's a former KKK member for Christ's sake. There's absolutely nothing to like about the man, other than that he has managed to bring in millions and millions of dollars in pork to WV over the years, for a bunch of bridges and buildings that all proudly bear his name, now.

This is it! Senator John Kerry today called on his Senate colleagues to help him defeat the Alito nomination with a filibuster. If Sen. Kerry’s effort fails, Alito will be confirmed and help shape our laws for decades.

We’ve identified key senators who could provide critical support to the filibuster effort – and they all need to hear the same message from you:

“FILIBUSTER ALITO!”

Well, Feinstein has changed her position.

I am sure my email a couple of days ago is the one that did it. I swear it is.

Even if it is nothing more than a "lost cause", it is one worth fighting for/ At some point, Democrats have to stand for soemting, and what better cause than educating those Americans willing to listen (which, in todays political climate seems to be about the 10% that can swing an election) of the probable consequences of the Alito appointment.

The FIRST Republican has turned against Alito!

--

Republican senator Lincoln Chafee says he will oppose Alito

RAW STORY
Published: January 30, 2006

Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee (R-RI) announced this morning in Providence that he will vote against the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court.

In a statement this morning, the Rhode Island senator said he was "greatly concerned" about some of Alito's philosophies, according to the Providence Journal. Chafee is the first Republican to announce a vote against Alito.

The Journal did not say whether the senator would back a filibuster. Liberal Democrats Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) are mounting an eleventh-hour bid to block the nominee.

Chafee's opposition comes amid low approval ratings at home; the moderate pro-choice Republican is struggling to maintain his position for reelection.

His opposition -- and that of Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) -- shows what role personal campaigns can play in the confirmation of a nominee to the Supreme Court. Byrd announced that he would support Alito the same day a rich Republican candidate entered the race against him.

January 30, 2006

PalJoey
New York, New York

Dear PalJoey:

Thank you for sharing with me your concerns about the proposed filibuster in the United States Senate regarding the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to serve as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. As I explained from the Senate floor, I believe the key to American progress has been the
ever-expanding circle of freedom and opportunity. If you look at Judge Alito's statements and his record, it is clear that Judge Alito would narrow that circle while endangering our nation's fundamental system of checks and balances.

This is a vote of tremendous significance. History will show that Judge Alito's nomination is the tipping point against constitutionally-based freedoms and protections we cherish as individuals and as a nation. He would roll back decades of progress, and roll over when confronted with an administration too willing to play fast and loose with the rules. Because I do not think Judge Alito would advance the principles Americans hold most dear, I oppose his nomination and support efforts to block his confirmation.

Sincerely yours,
Hillary Rodham Clinton

Agreed - Sometimes it is not about winning and compromise. If they don't stand up and at least explain to the American people why they believe this nomination is so wrong, then what little respect I have for the party will be totally lost.

YWIW--Dianne and Hillary were on the fence, so if the filibuster miraculously works--you and I can take PERSONAL credit and do a great big happy dance!

Even if it doesn't, it feels good to have fought the good fight.

Maybe instead of setting up roadblocks they can't win, they should concentrate on asking Howard Dean what he's done with all their money.

actually, he's probably made the best use of their money in years upgrading infrastructure and pouring money into grassroots organizations. all politics is local. destitute senators come election time have a buttload of ways to get money. except for those 17 traitors who votes aye on cloture...how many of them are up for re-election this year? should make for some interesting primaries.
