Disgusting!
I don't understand how the majority of their gay group would vote FOR IT? There's gotta be more to the story...
Well it doesn't really mention what they mean. If they're referring to attending class and other college functions, and there is a dress code for everyone, then there is no reason why drag should be tolerated.
I gather that "hip-hop" attire among other forms of casual dress are also prohibited.
If they're talking about prohibiting it altogether including in private situations or off-campus then it's wrong. But that's not the impression I got.
^Agreed
I suppose it defeats the purpose of an all male school when students are dressing as women.
Seems like it's just part of a dress code, and therefore fine by me. But "Due To"? In the title, that's just misleading.
I haven't re-read the article yet, but that is the impression I got.
And I "get" dress codes...but at COLLEGE? That's ridiculous. I want to know if crossdressing has been disruptive to their campus. If not, seems like this guy set the rule because he doesn't approve for his own personal reasons.
Not just any college. A private, all male college.
"We are talking about five students who are living a gay lifestyle that is leading them to dress a way we do not expect in Morehouse men," he said.
so then why make a big deal out of 5 MEN???
I went to a private women's college and we didn't have a dress code. Heck, we'd wear slippers to class. And there were a lot of students who cross-dressed but I guess it's not as noticeable if you're a woman. But the environment was very open and no one was shunned because of their orientation. There were no "gays" or "breeders" there - we were all simply students. I won't say that we were all one huge happy family. You're always going to have people who don't get along. But it was never because of the gay/straight issue. There was no issue. People were who they were. I had many friends who were lesbians and I just saw them as my friends.
If they are dressing like a big sparkly drag queen, then yes, it should be stopped, as it is distracting.
But, if these are cross dresser or transgendered folks, they should be alowed to wear whatever they what, as long as it's appropriate.
Man, this should be linked with the thread about the Lesbian wearing a tux in her Senior pictures...
I was offered a full ride at a college that insisted on girls wearing skirts or dresses that fell below the knee. The guys were required to wear dress pants, shirt and tie. Colleges can have very strict dress codes.
There are many private colleges with dress codes, especially in the south. I had a friend who went to a college where they had to wear collared shirts to class, and couldn't wear jeans or flip-flops. Something that strict isn't an environment I'd choose for myself, but in this case, I wouldn't mind if more places banned wearing pajamas in public.
And pants that aren't worn properly.
Pull them up, douche!
I hated it when my kids would wear PJ's to class when I was teaching.

I'm all for getting outraged, but even when I heard this last night I doubted that the main reason was simply because of five "gay" students.
And here's the thing. I don't know many gay guys who need to do drag to go to school or to work. Generally, folks who do that are struggling with gender issues. And if you're a transgendered male, perhaps an all male school ISN'T the right place for you.
My high school had a dress code, but cross-dressing was allowed, as long as the outfit was in dress code... (And this was in southern Texas.)
I remember when gays and lesbians had real battles to fight. Now it's drapes at the yearbook photo shoot and cross-dressing at all-male private schools. I guess that's a good thing.
If someone can't suck up wearing a male uniform while they go to class they probably shouldn't go to a male private school.
On Transgeneration, Lucas, a f2m transsexual attended women only Smith College. He said he and another f2m student felt they were constantly discriminated against. I never understood that. If you feel you are really a man on the inside, why attend an all women's school? In the future, wouldn't that send up a few red flags if a man has a degree from Smith?

I don't recall anyone wearing anything that was inappropriate like skimpy pjs or anything. Sweats and those pj bottoms with a teeshirt were very common and at the time wearing pj bottoms as pants was "in". One of the dorms had classrooms in the basement and it was very common for students who lived in that dorm to wear slippers to class. I never wore pjs to class though I did wear sweats - usually if I was going straight to softball practice or work (I worked in the school's scene shop)

If these were the only issues, I might be able to see your point, but being denied equal rights or beaten into a coma sound like real battles to me.
