Almost 40% Of Indian Men Have Had Gay Sex

(New Delhi) India might have given the world the Kamasutra, but most of the country's young men cling to conservative attitudes toward sex, and are often confused about the subject, a survey published Monday showed.
One statistic in the survey of young men's sexual attitudes published in the India Today magazine showed that 63 per cent of those polled said they expected their future wives to be virgins.
But while the majority of men polled expect their wives to have remained celibate before tying the knot, 46 per cent said they have had premarital sex, and 47 per cent said sex was very important in their lives.
Some 34 per cent said they would have sex ``anytime, anywhere.'
The survey was conducted by AC Neilsen-Org-Marg for India Today and polled 2,559 unmarried men between the ages of 16 to 25 in 11 Indian cities.
Much of India remains relatively traditional when it comes to sex, especially with regard to premarital sex. In many parts of the country, even talking about sex is still considered taboo. But attitudes are slowly changing and annual sex surveys have become a regular feature in Indian magazines.
Half of those polled in the India Today survey said women who wore revealing clothes were sexually liberated, and nearly 62 per cent said they watched pornographic films with friends.
The survey also looked at attitudes toward homosexuality.
Although homosexual sex is a crime in India _ and prejudices remain widespread _ 37 per cent of men surveyed said they'd had at least one homosexual experience.
The magazine did not say when exactly the survey was conducted, and no margin-of-error was given.

"Anytime, anywhere?" Shocking!
I choose to remain chaste until my wedding day.
"knowingly"?
*gasp*
That's the same percentage of evangelicals who have had gay hooker sex.

So almost 40% of indian men are criminals according to Indian law? If that is right i am very confounded why India hasn't been criticised for that more by the international media. I bet that Israel will receive much more critique than India has if the gay parade in Jerusalem is cancelled. The critique would probably be even worse if the parade would be allowed to take place and some religous demonstrators behaved violently.
A Swedish example of this skewed measurement is that a prominent swedish feminist compared the gender structure in Sweden with that of taleban Afghanistan.
Now countries of course must be allowed to differ culturally and the demands have to be lower for poorer countries but there is a risk that the reforms will stop in the development world if the rich world doesn't dare to encourage any reforms and at the same time makes reforms at home at a frantic pace. Reforms that might be used as a bad example in the development world, like for instance one parent adoptions.

Interesting...
(I know the Indian man who sleeps in MY bed every night has had gay sex. )
with you, jaily, that could account for the 40%
Whoa, Jaily, you don't look Indian at all.
i first read this thread as "$0% if Indiana Men...."
Swe- none of those men polled would openly admit it, nor would they openly pursue it.
There's a huge cruising ground under the Gateway of India arch in Mumbai. Right across from the posh Taj Mahal hotel.
How convenient!

Exactly, Cheno...imagine what a poll like that here would produce.
We know the real truth....how many "straight" men dabble.
I'm sitting here in the middle of a bullpen full of Indian IT guys... I wonder if I should fix my hair.
India has been criticized by groups like Amnesty International for years. Our media usually reports stories they feel have more relevance to the audience (whether the audience wants it or not).
It's hard to generalize Eastern sexuality if you haven't adopted Western norms. Culture in India is different than it is here. In many areas people have no idea what "gay" is or what it means or how it works. What this article points to besides blatant hypocrisy is how broad the spectrum of sexuality is. You could ask questions like "does a homosexual act make you gay?" People here would argue yes, but it can’t always be the case can it?

I think the best way to define sexuality is by the sexual attraction and not the sexual act. A person who is only or mostly attracted by people of the same sex is gay in my mind even if that person never have had sex with the members of the same sex so to speak. The sexual behaviour should be more dependant on the cultural circumstances than the sexual attraction although that is also affected.
Holly Hobby and My Little Pony. Good times.
I'm responsible for two of them. I don't know if they were counted.
I'm only responsible for one. Do we cancel each other out?

Well, that could mean anything. They could have attended a performance of A Chorus Line, or held their wife's purse while waiting for her to try on a sari at Macys. Or went ice skating. Who knows what they consider a "homosexual experience"? I consider patting a teammate's ass during a football game pretty gay. Is that a "homosexual experience"?
It is if it's done right!

That explains why Bombay Dreams ran so long on Broadway.

Wait, "straight" guys pick up chorus boys after shows? Straight guys GO to shows? Do they wait by the stage door and ask for an autograph and a bj?
About the whole "homosexual act" thing- it's tricky to define what that constitutes to them. Straight men who are friends often hold hands walking down the street.
one must consider that in traditional indian culture boys and girls are kept separated until quite a late age, many probably until marriage. boys do things like dance together because dancing with a girl is not allowed. i would imagine that many indian males end up having at least one "homosexual experience" by "default" because of this phenomenon. i wonder if indeed most of the same-sex experiences reported happened at a young age.
