Almost Too Good to be True

Aparently even the midwestern far right are starting to question the Bush Administration and Republican financial policies.
I work in the Financial Aid office of a state university in Kansas and just had the most delightful telephone call transfered to me. An older gentleman (who I shall lovingly refer to as an "old coot") began talking my ear off about how he keeps seeing Bush on the tv talking about how bad the economy is and how schools are struggling to find loan funds for students. He then asked whether the school I work for is having trouble with loans. I advised him that there have been some problems with lenders no longer dealing with student loans, but that we've actually been able to award more funds this year than ever before.
This caused a long tirade from the gentleman about how it was just another example of Bush's lies. He let me know that he has personally called up Wal-Mart, Wallgreens, and other stores in town to see if they are experiencing any financial difficulty. He even asked the contractor who is putting the addition on his house whether he was having trouble with his credit. The whole time this was going on, I could hear the man's wife in the background, yelling about more of Bush's lies.
The gentleman then asked for my opinion, putting me in a rather tight spot as it is certainly NOT my job to give my political opinions to a complete stranger. Being very careful to state that my views did not necessarily reflect those of the school, I suggested that he look into Obama's financial policies. The "old coot" then told me that he had been leaning the other way, but now he's thinking he just might go with Obama because of all these lies about how bad the markets are. He then let me know that instead of worrying about the jobs of people on Wall Street, we need to worry about the jobs of people in Texas who lost their businesses and homes to the hurricane.
I don't think I typed up this incident with nearly the amount of humor that it caused, but I still thought it was worth sharing. When even redneck good-ol' boys in Kansas start voting for Obama, there must be something going on.

that really IS encouraging. i keep thinking, if folks can be diligent/proactive enough to not buy the party line, or the advertising spin, on any candidate...and do their own kind of research and think about choices....the whole electoral process in our country could change drastically.
And it's nice "Old Coot" was thinking about lil ole us down here, too.
Thanks for posting that.
