Does anyone love them as much as I do? I'm watching this clip on my "Rockin' With the Chipmunks" video from the Ed Sullivan Show...I just love em'!
I also have two other Chipmunks videos...I wish I could find them!

Trivia time:
Ross Bagdasarian, AKA Dave Seville (and the voice of all the Chipmunks)was the nephew of novelist/playwright William Saroyan. The two co-wrote Rosemary Clooney's big hit, "Come On-a My House".
Before coming up with the Chipmunks, Bagdasarian experimented with the idea of sped-up voices on his hit record "My Friend the Witch Doctor" with it's infamous chorus:
OOH EE OOH AHH AHH
TING TANG WALLA WALLA BING BANG
OOH EE OOH AHH AHH
TING TANG WALLA WALLA BANG BANG

I grew up with the new chipmunks and the Chipettes (?). I LOVED that show. It's weird that you started this thread because just last night I was thinking that I really wanted to see The Chipmunks movie that was made in the early 90's, I believe. Does anyone know the movie I'm talking about? They go all around the world in a balloon.
And does anyone remember the episode where the Chipettes were Charlie's Angels? Oh, classic television, folks.

Posted: 9/30/05 at 8:45pmPlum - audio acceleration. It was all Ross Bagdasarian. They would record the instrumentals with the tape recorder at 7 1/2 ips (inches per second). Then they would play the instrumental back at 3/34 ips, which would make it half tempo, and an octave lower. Bagdasarian would sing the vocals in his normal voice. When it was played back at 7 1/2 ips, it sounded like the Chipmunks.

I have the original Christmas Recording somewhere. It's on clear red vinyl and so cool. My grandmother had an older stereo that would play things at 16 1/2 rpm so we used to listen to the real voices as well.
That brought back great memories....

I vaguely remember David Seville on the Ed Sullivan show with the chipmunks and they were hand puppets in what looked like a straw nest. Not sure if my addled brain is remembering right. Does anyone know if they did appear as puppets?
This was about the same ime Topo Gigio was a reoccuring guest.

The fun part sabout playijng the record at the slow speed is hearing how Bagdasarian had to ovvvverrrr ennnunnciatte the words so they could be understood when sped up:
WANNNNNT A PLLLLLLANNNNNE THAT LLLLLOOOOPS THE LLLLLOOOOP
MEEEE I WANNNNNT A HOOOOOLLLLLLA HOOOOOP....

Posted: 10/1/05 at 11:14amOh dear! You make me realize that the holidays are coming and our local radio station, WALK-FM, will start a full month of holiday music. This is a Clear Channel operation and I think their play list consists of about 20 songs. That means we hear "The Chipmunk Song" at least once every two hours. Heaven forfend! I'd switch to another station, but WALK has the best weather and traffic in the area--very important to someone who commutes to work.
