Mainly situational awareness.  Perhaps some of us are so consumed with the day-to-day that we're not aware of gun manufacturing shops or shooting galleries within close proximity.  Also, I'm a former handgun owner.  If I was capable of having a change of heart then perhaps someone else will as well.
