Americans don't do well on religion test.

I always say I'm not going to post in the religion threads, and I always end up posting. As wonderwaiter said it is extremely personal, and that might be why it is so hard to explain (especially through writing).
David walked into the valley With a stone clutched in his hand He was only a boy But he knew someone must take a stand There will always be a valley Always mountains one must scale There will always be perilous waters Which someone must sail -Into the Fire Scarlet Pimpernel

Do those of you who claim to be spiritual but not religious still follow the basic Judeo-Christian blueprint? That's not an attack or a loaded question. Do you believe Jesus was the messiah, divine, the son of god, etc?

I never did. I just believed (and maybe still do) that there is something of a source to which we return. Maybe it's just some energy without consciousness or maybe it is a benevolent force.

But anything corporeal like son of god incarnate, prophets, or other manifestations of it on Earth I think are just projections of the human mind. Don't buy any of that.

There are many belief systems out there that have stories so similar to the birth of Jesus that it makes me wonder.

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

Well I'm sure he did exist. And people obviously thought he was supernatural. But was he really?

Like someone mentioned earlier about the flood. It happened. There is proof that a great flood occurred during the time that most holy books mention it.

But did god cause the flood? I don't believe it was caused by some god who was pissed off and wanted to wipe the slate clean. That smacks of an archaic explanation by people who didn't have the science to understand that it was a natural phenomenon.

No one blames god for the ice age. Or the Black plague. Or any other world catastrophes.

It just seems if you are "spiritual" and not religious, you're not going to be a believer of any of the trappings of so-called "organized" religion. If you're spiritual but still believe in Jesus, then you're Christian, aren't you? (the royal You, not anyone in particular)

I'm not spiritual. I'm not religious. In the end, I don't find these questions important enough to worry about. I'm good with 'I'm here...my time is limited and I think the world is a beautiful place...so enjoy.' At this point in my life, I don't need any further answers.

However, I am a product of a Christian Brothers education. And I am astonished that there are ANY Catholics that can't bust out the word 'transubstantion' at a moments notice. Stunned.

I would agree with that, Phyllis.

Spirituality to me has always been that there is a cognizance of some higher power, but that any codification on that power is based on (and is a reflection of) mankind's own insecurities.

Or the Black plague. Or any other world catastrophes.

except that they did. at the time of the black plague, it was thought that it was punishment for sinners. there was a priest who observed that he was surprised to see the faithful dying in equal numbers to sinners.

and no one on this board can dare to say there aren't elements in this world who don't say that AIDS is a punishment for homosexuality.

at the time of the tsunami in southeast asia, apparently the archbishop of canterbury was confirmed to have said something along the degree of "i can't believe that god would be so wicked as to send a tsunami around christmas time!"

i'm agnostic myself, but damn if hitchens doesn't make me feel stupid even for that (you don't have to agree with all his views, nor should you, but no one can deny that he doesn't articulate the position well):

DAMN!

Was gonna spell-check that one, but got called to actually do work at the SH*Tshow of a job, and hit post too soon!

Yes...mama spelled it wrong. Bless me father...and all that jazz.

Believe it or not, that wasn't hammered into my head growing up the way other dogma was. The thing that surprises me is that most people don't know that any sort of sexual thought or feeling (let alone action) that isn't of the heterosexual married variety is a violation of the sixth commandment, plain and simple.

And the way Pat Robertson blamed the Haiti quake on the fact that the Haitians practice voodoo.

It's always easy to blame god for bad things.

Maybe I should find religion. I sure could use a scapegoat for some of the bad things that happen to me. Then I wouldn't have to try and actually grow and learn from various misfortunes.

I'm very much of the RobbieJ train of thought. The only thing that occassionally nags at me is where (not who) that first speck of whatever came from.

Well, you'll have plenty of time to think about that question when you're spending Eternity burning in Hell!

More people knew that Zeus was king of the Greek gods than that Joe Biden is the current Vice President!

Well, maybe if Biden could throw lightening bolts people would remember him too.

Though to be honest I forget that Biden even exists from time to time,

I was telling my parents about the survey (turns out my father had already read it) last night and both of them seemed surprised that I had learned about Martin Luther in school (I went to a Dominican Catholic high school), albeit in history. My mom joked that she learned about him in first grade (Catholic elementary school), but only because he was a bad man who went against the Catholic church.

I'm still surprised by the relatively comprehensive sexual education we received in my Catholic high school. In one class, we're told all impure thoughts and actions outside of marriage are sinful...and in the next class, we're watching a cartoon about STD's (gangster themed, with Tricky Mona aka trichomoniasis as the gang moll) and proper condom use.

We had a relatively comprehensive sex ed, too! What order or priests or nuns did you have? We had Dominican sisters, who I know are pretty liberal and are VERY big on education.

De LaSalle Christian Brothers.

My FAVORITE thing ever said at the school I attended was by the gym teacher that was also our health teacher. His idea of inspiring abstinence in his students:

'You should have sex at your age, anyway, cause you'll be squirtin' on the walls before you even get it in.'

22 years later, I'm still in shock.

My favorite sex ed lesson came from my 8th grade PE/Health teacher who with a straight face told us about the girl he knew who got pregnant from swimming naked in the frog pond (yep, in North Carolina all ponds are frog ponds). He told us to be sure never to masturbate in a pond or suffer the consequences.
