That hasn't stopped certain groups from attempting to make Christianity the national religion (note the absence of Jesus from the Constitution and, for once, stop saying all the founding fathers were Christians! Many of them decidedly were not).

very true. Most of the founding fathers were Deists (is that spelled right?). They did not believe that Jesus was the son of God, and it makes me mad when people get in arguments with me over that. Story time:

When I was in college, I said that I believe gay people should be married. Someone said no! And I said well, as the decleration of independance states, "All men are created equal" so the right of marriage for a straight couple should be given to those who are gay. The person then said, "Well our founding fathers were Christian and did not know that one day we would be having this problem." I said, "No. Our founding fathers were Deists, not Christian." And I thought he was going to punch me for saying that. Someone had to change the subject quick and then he walked off. Some people would rather believe what people have told them then what actually happened in history.
