RIP Anna Louizos

Oh such a heavy day. I’ll never forget how the set for In The Heights at 37 Arts took my breath away. Such a realistic representation of Washington Heights. RIP Anna, you will be missed.

RIP Anna Louizos

Her sets for In The Heights, Cinderella and Holiday Inn were gorgeous

What a loss. So many of her sets are simply iconic and instantly memorable, even all these years later.

There was a design of hers I've never forgotten. It was an Off-Broadway adaptation by Manhattan Ensemble Theatre of Franz Kafka's The Castle, downtown at 55 Mercer Street. Because the source material was so dreamlike and surreal, Louizos went with a big, bizarre cube that contained much of the action. Hard to describe, but it worked beautifully.

Re: RIP Anna Louizos

She should have won the Tony for In the Heights. Her scenic design was so integral in creating the world of the show. Her work was always so dramaturgically informed and elevated the entire production.

Anna's wife Robyn Goodman was the longtime producer of Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, PA, and Anna essentially became the resident set designer there in all but name. Her most recent credit there was SOUTH PACIFIC just last month -- another beautiful design. She'll be missed.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

This was a great set. Anna was such a talented and lovely person. It's been sad to see her passing.

Re: RIP Anna Louizos

I got to work with one of the shows she did set design for and got to go on and behind it. It was pretty cool.

May she rest in Peace.
