CNN
Control of Congress could change in '06, poll shows
Thursday, August 10, 2006; Posted: 9:03 a.m. EDT (13:03 GMT)
(CNN) -- Most Americans believe the GOP-controlled Congress has been a failure and say they plan to vote for Democrats in November, according to a poll released Wednesday.
Fifty-three percent of registered voters polled by Opinion Research Corp. for CNN said they were supporting Democrats, while 40 percent said they were leaning Republican. The remaining 7 percent either planned to support another party or had no opinion.
As for changing their minds when they get to the ballot box, only 43 percent of those planning to vote for Democrats said that was a possibility as opposed to 54 percent of those saying they plan to support Republicans. (Read the full results -- PDF)
Fifty-four percent said that since 1995, the GOP-led Congress has been a failure. Forty percent called it a success. In a similar 1998 poll, 58 percent of respondents called Congress successful.
Despite the apparent lack of confidence in the GOP, another question seemed to show that the respondents' confidence in Democrats was shaky, too. Asked which party would move the nation in the right direction, 43 percent said Republicans, compared to 41 who said Democrats.
But the national mood may not be as sour as it would appear -- 55 percent of people polled said things are going "very well" or "fairly well" in the United States.
Asked which issues facing Congress this year were "extremely important," the respondents said in order: terrorism, gasoline prices, Iraq, the economy, immigration, the Middle East, the minimum wage, prescription drugs for seniors, the cost of electricity, stem-cell research, and same-sex marriages.
Forty-eight percent of respondents said terrorism was extremely important. That was followed closely by fuel prices, at 47 percent; the situation in Iraq, at 45 percent; and the economy, at 40 percent.
The poll was conducted by telephone August 2 and 3 with 1,047 adult Americans responding.
The sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points, except for the questions on congressional success and which party would lead the nation in the right direction. Those questions were asked of a half sample, or about 524 people, and the sampling error was plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

Political analysts are saying that Lieberman's loss is "ominous" for Republican candidates:
===
ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos: "The fact that a political unknown like Ned Lamont unseated an established Senator like Joe Lieberman shows there’s real anger out in the electorate…that’s bad news for Republicans."
The (conservative) Washington Times’ Donald Lambro: "Murphy's Law says that if things can get worse, they probably will and that seems to be the case for President Bush and the Republicans…There is no doubt that Republicans face heavy, maybe hurricane-force winds in the coming weeks. The political climate is hostile to them, there is more intensity among Democratic voters and more pessimism among all voters."
Pew Research Center Director Andrew Kohut: "...there are an awful lot of independents out there who want something more than Republicans not just being in lockstep with the president." [NPR, "Talk of the Nation," 8/8/06]
Analyst Stuart Rothenberg: "[Democrats] are generally more energized than the Republicans about the war, but not just about the war… They'll want to send a message about the war, about George W. Bush. And it's not a friendly message.”
The Cook Report’s Jennifer Duffy: "I think if you are a candidate who has taken a fairly hard-line on Iraq - you know, that things are going fine and, you know, stay the course - I think that you probably are a little bit more vulnerable." [NPR, "Talk of the Nation," 8/8/06]
Marist Institute Polling Director Lee Miringoff: "To the degree that [the Connecticut primary] is seen as a referendum on Iraq, and it does have an impact on turnout, that can make Republican congressional candidates worried."

Once again, the Republicans trot out that particularly old chestnut, the "you're either for us or the terrorists" line, this time about...a PUBLIC ELECTION!

Did Rove reach out to Lieberman? ABC News has updated its report from yesterday: “Dan Gerstein called from the Lieberman campaign to say the…account from another Lieberman adviser is not accurate. While confirming that Rove called Lieberman, he added: ‘Rove made a personal call, no help was offered, and we are not interested regardless.’ A senior White House official also says that the account is ‘not accurate.’”

Hello, SockPuppet and welcome to BroadwayWorld!
The New Haven Register, which endorsed Liberman for the primary, now wants him to withdraw from the race:
===
Joe Lieberman should accept the results of his party's primary. He lost.
He should reconsider his bid to run as an independent candidate and get out of the race.
For an 18-year-incumbent who was the Democrats' 2000 vice presidential candidate, his margin of defeat to Ned Lamont, a political unknown until a few months ago, was significant. Lamont even carried Lieberman's home town of New Haven.
Lieberman says he is still a Democrat, but his campaign will divide the party that rejected him.
As an independent candidate, he can only hope to win if he holds onto a significant percentage of those Democrats who voted for him in the primary, and picks up sizeable votes from both independents and Republicans.
Somehow, the irony of a general election strategy that relies on Republican votes to win seems to have eluded a politician who touted his Democratic credentials during the campaign. It merely supports Lamont supporters' charge that Lieberman is a closet Republican.
By running as a third-party candidate, Lieberman has left himself open to the charge that he is not only a spoiler but that he cares more about himself than the party to which he still claims allegiance.
The primary vote should have told Lieberman that he was out of touch with the state that he had taken too much for granted. Until almost the closing days of the election, he seemed unable to gauge the deep anger of Democrats over the war in Iraq and his support for it.
Joe Lieberman should accept the results of his party's primary. He lost.

Then again, knowing that Rick Santorum wouldn't retain his seat the old fashioned way, by earning votes, the AP reported:
"Green Party candidate Carl Romanelli, making his first bid for statewide elective office, acknowledged Monday that Republican contributors probably supplied most of the $100,000 that he said he spent gathering signatures to qualify for the Nov. 7 ballot."

Oh my. HDT throws around "OCD" to describe Namo, yet here he is in this thread posting over and over and over and over and over and over before anyone else bothers to comment.
Oh.. and wasn't it YOU, HDT who criticized me for suggesting that you seek therapy. In fact, you nearly had a meltdown over it. And here you are throwing around the phrase OCD at Namo
My question is (rhetorical of course) - why is it appropriate or OK for you to mock Namo via your OCD namecalling, but you had a meltdown and kept pushing a sob story on everyone when it was suggested that therapy might help with some of your issues.
Do you REALLY fail to see your hypocrisy. I mean really... talk about seeing through your own "lens"

Of course he fails. He fails at everything. He failed in his relationship with his estranged parents. He failed when he tried to tone it down on this website and he failed at his contrition and he just is an all around failure.
He's mentally unhealthy, he accidentally revealed it, and now he throws around terms like "OCD" as if he knows what it means!
