Wow, gang, why so vitriolic? You have to have been a gay street activist when he was dismissing such as relics of the ineffective movements of the '60s maybe. You maybe had to be out there fighting for queer liberation and an end to AIDS when the Human Rights Campaign Fund decided to change the focus of the '92 March on Washington to gays in the military and endure Sullivan saying once there was gay marriage those awful old "gay rights advocates" (he never once framed it other than gay "rights", liberation was never part of his theology) could fold up their tents and go home.
Forget his rabid anti-Rhodes Scholar vitriol against Bill Clinton, for me the latest last straw was his criticism of that book that gave all the credit for success of gay marriage in the US to two Republicans, not because it left out the cornerstone work of Mary Bonauto from Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders or Sue Hyde of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (one of the many groups he despised back when he was the kind of Republican who defended W and the war in Iraq) and the Sodomy Project (which started to overturn sodomy laws and was the first to move to gay marriage) but because the book LEFT HIM OUT. Him and his blog and his TV appearances. THAT was the problem with the book.
Add to that the way he made fun of gay affinity groups until he grew a beard and for some other reason (which I am leaving unwritten because Pal Joey once told me I can never ever say in print what that reason is) decided he was a "bear" and began singing the praises of community for the first time in his I'M SUCH A UNIQUE SNOWFLAKE life.
I am SICK TO DEATH of people like Sullivan who "evolve" and whose "thinking changes" but who think writing something like "sometimes it means I write imprudent arguments I have to withdraw" means he's let himself off the hook and thinking people should too. Well, where are the gold stars for those of us who were already where Sullivan took years to evolve to? Hmmmmm?
