Surprised nobody has mentioned "No Time for Sargents" for which he was nominated for a Tony later adapting it to film.

I have a clear memory of him in " Six Characters in Search of an Author" playing the Father - again a different side of his talent.
RIP.

Correction in order- Gomer Pyle was played by Jim Nabors, not "Neighbors".

I also had a soft spot for the gospel albums he put out more recently. Hearing his voice sing the old hymns always made me think of my father.

I thought it would have been neat if they could have gotten him to step into August: Osage County (either on stage or screen) as Beverly. Yes, he was a bit too old for the part, but I would have loved to have heard him do his monologue.

I thought he was wonderful in "Waitress" with Keri Russell.
