Hand-drawn feature films are dead according to John Lasseter.
"What’s the future of 2-D, hand-drawn animation at Disney?
We still are doing some … We’re still doing a lot of short films. There are no features on the docket for hand-drawn, but we’re definitely keeping hand drawn alive at the studio. Hand-drawn is finding it’s way in a very interesting way into the technology. There’s a lot of hand-drawing that goes into the computer animated movies at Walt Disney Animation Studios."
Disney and Pixar: John Lasseter previews dinosaurs, Frozen, Big Hero 6 ... but no hand-drawn feature plans
^For now maybe, but in the future, hand-drawn animated features may make a huge comeback like how musical films in Hollywood did not get revived untill Moulin Rouge and Chicago came around.
But for me, the recent movies still felt like they were stuck in that familiar 90's feeling of how characters are drawn and animated. Disney needs to do some creativity for hand-drawn features to feel new again and audiences will be flocking to their nearest movie theatre.
But I still really liked TPATF despite my issues with the story and characters.
