Posted: 10/3/06 at 4:42pmI had the pleasure of seeing her at the Hartford Stage production of "The Mystery of Irma Vep" a couple years ago. I'm a huge fan of Charles Busch, but I think Varla is GREAT when it comes to drag queens. She was in a movie that was pretty funny to (can't remember the title) If anyone has the chance, listen to her song 'The Yodeling Weiner' you will laugh til you cry!

Posted: 10/3/06 at 7:53pmI was a regular at "88's" in the early 90s when Varla did her infamous "lesbian du jour" every week (we got everyone from Olivia Newton John to Dusty Springfield, the latter my favorite). And she did a mini version of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Anyone else remember 88s? With that brilliant singer from BARNUM -- oh, it escapes me! Terri White! -- the singing bartender. What great days. Then Varla lost weight, and though I salute her need to entice in her private life, I missed the zaftig gal. She was also along side of Betty Buckley in her two night stint downtown at the Bottom Line, playing Carrie to her Margaret White. That should've been wonderful, but of course, those scenes in CARRIE are actually wonderful, not camp (the only material in the show that has real weight), so it didn't quite come off.

"Yodelling Wiener" is the greatest!
It reminded me of this old video I saw on iFilm about this woman on LSD who tells about this time when she tried to bite into a hot dog. According to her, it had eyes, a nose, a mouth, and a wife and seven kids at home.

Posted: 10/3/06 at 9:37pmI am just so glad that Logo stopped playing the "Revue Your History" between every show...lol. I ran around singing about the "legendary Stonewall, uh huh!" for about a year.

Terri White still shows up at Rose's Turn these days, I think.
And Varla was in Girls Will be Girls with the terribly fun (and funny) Jack Plotnick and Coco Peru.

Posted: 10/4/06 at 12:24pmI'd love to see a movie with Varla and Charles Busch. Perhaps a remake of "Whatever Happened to baby Jane?"

Posted: 10/4/06 at 12:39pmVarla is the best. I've seen her live many times. Her x-rated "Schoolhouse Rock" is my favorite. "Girls Will Be Girls" is a hoot. "Varla let me help you with your luggage here." " Oh,my luggage is out in the car." "Oh, I'm sorry, it's just your a@#!"

Count me in the "Love Varla" club. Her "If I Only Had a (word that I cannot type here)" is one of the funniest songs I have ever heard. (Any one else know to what I am referring?!?)
Her alter ego, Jeff, was fantastic as Mary Sunshine in Chicago on Broadway as well.

Posted: 10/4/06 at 1:01pmBilly, I love "If I Only Had A ....". It is filthy and fabulous. Her "blue" material is a scream. "Love on the Rocks" is great too when she talks about washing out her panties at a Times Square McDonalds and talks about someone leaving faster than " a foreign trick who's late for a matinee of Les Mis." Priceless.
