So I'm moving down there next fall for school....does anyone have any cool insider tidbits??Cheap places to shop? Things to avoid?
I'm just curious :)
Where will you be living? I used to live in Alexandria.
I currently live in the Columbia Heights neighborhood in DC.
Is that near the zoo? Or wait that's Cleveland Park.
I used to date a guy that lived in Adam's Morgan. That was kind of crazy.
I lived in the No. Va. area for most of my life, but never actually in the city.
Stockard Fan, I'm a half mile up the road from the zoo. I ride my bicycle past there every day when I ride through Rock Creek Park.
I lived there for a semester. The program I was with had a house pretty much on Capitol Hill, so everything around us was kind of expensive. I'd say just look at the Washington Post, etc. for free things to do (which are EVERYWHERE) otherwise it can get kind of pricey. The Metro is fantastic and coming back to the El in Chicago was like a slap in the face haha oh well. You will love DC though. Great weather, a beautiful place!! :)
Become a fan of Washington, DC on Facebook. They have posts almost every day about something going on in the area.
And try Ethiopian food. It's like pizza is to NYC.
So I was thinking of the right place.......I love DC. It really is a gorgeous city (for the most part). I was down there last month and realized how much I miss it.
I'm going to be in Brookland, so I'd probs have to take the metro to get to anything really interesting.
I was there yesterday. I love the Cleveland Park area.
I went to Mount Vernon College from 1988 to 1990, which is located in NW D.C. I loved it, and I go back every year to visit friends. The school was in a great location- walking distance to Georgetown, and not too far from all the fabulous sites. I'll be there the weekend of 5th...can't wait!! I really can't remember any cheap places to shop, but if you are on a tight budget, definitely avoid Georgetown. (except for the bars...they have some cool deals!!)
Yeah, I don't know of any really cheap places to shop in the city really.
I live there now, in the Logan Circle neighborhood. I know I'm biased, but I really think it's the best area in DC.
I second the Ethiopian food recommendation. Try Etete on 9th St or Lalibela on 14th and P. Get the vegetarian sampler and the doro wat.
As for cheap shopping -- what sort of goods are you looking for?
You can read DCist.com for info on what's going on around town. Washingtonian.com is also good, especially for restaurant recommendations (they put out annual lists of the 100 Best and 100 Best Cheap Eats. So useful). The Washington City Paper is a free weekly paper, and is great for info on weekend and upcoming events.
I'm moving away from DC in a few weeks. I've always said that I'm bored with DC and ready for somehwhere new, but now I find myself getting sentimental about my home for the past 3 years.
