Anyone Else Sick of Q?

I am so tired of people using Avenue Q as an excuse to be racist. Yes, the song has an element of truth in it, but that should not be used as a banner to make it acceptable to flaunt your racist beliefs.

If there were a KKK parade downtown I think some people here would find it perfectly fine as long as the hooded figures were singing that damn song.

Racism is not cute.

Anyone else feel this way?

Obviously. Okay, so I may be a little bit racist. There's more things in the world to bitch about than racism.

If you are a white male, maybe.
And I am not "Bitching" about racism. It is one of the vilest aspects of our society. You "bitch" about your work, you "bitch" about waiting for the cable guy, you "bitch" about your boyfriend's messy habits. You don't "Bitch" about racism. You fight against it, you call people on their racist behavior or comments and you don't let it go unnoticed.

PEACE.

re: Anyone Else Sick of Q?

I think that racism is horrible and do everything in my power to stop it in the small ways that people can. I am going to be a teacher, I am going to be a parent, I can help influence the future generations and teach them that racism is bad. With that said, we can not deny that we have gut reactions to certain things, things that annoy us, I think that the main point of that song is to point out that no one is perfect, no one has the right to get on their high horse and preach at everyone else for being racist when they themselves are a little bit racist too. Just because those feelings exist does not mean that they are to be acted on. Its like when you are running late for a meeting, stuck in traffic and the guy infront of you is talking on his cell phone, playing with the radio and doesn't notice that the light changed and sits through it. You may want to get out of your car and smack him, but do you? NO...we at least I hope not. You sit there and you control yourself. Or if you meet someone new and they seem to be a little weird (think comic book nerd weird or something...or Broadway obsessed theatre geek for those who may meet us) and you are kind of turn off from talking to them...you still give them a chance and then you find out what a great person they are. No one is perfect and you can't deny that everyone IS a little bit racist, but we don't have to and should not act on it.

And yes, bitch away at and about ignorant people and situations that cause racism.

I remember one time in college for a performing arts class I sang "Carefully Taught" from "South Pacific" only because it was in my range and I knew it....anyway when I was done the professor pointed out that it was a racist song and I was mortified....I never sang that song again.

Your professor was a moron then. It is the antithesis of a racist song. Actually, it is anti-racist. If there is anything Rodgers & Hammerstein were not, is racist.

re: Anyone Else Sick of Q?

it's not a racist song. it's a song about how one has to be taught by those who hate to be a racist... you've got to be taught to hate and fear ... you've got to be taught before it's too late ... to hate all the people your relatives hate ...

Were you wearing a white robe and a hood when you sang it, Boobs? Maybe it was a wardrobe malfunction.

I know it's about racism. that's exactly what I said. it's a song about racism, but it is not, as boob's professor states: a racist song. there is nothing about the song that is racist...

re: Anyone Else Sick of Q?

It is not a racist song, but is a song that states that racism must be taught. Racism is not inbred, but is passed from parent to child, teacher to student, etc. It is an excellent song, and has been often paired up with Children Will Listen in medley.

The song showcases R&H's ability to use irony and sarcasm. The song mocks racism in a very poignant way.

re: Anyone Else Sick of Q?

Using "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" as an excuse to be racist is wrong
The song is not about being racist, but rather excepting the fact that we're all the same: different.
The message is clear: if "everyone stopped being so PC, maybe we could live in harmony"

re: Anyone Else Sick of Q?

I don't believe "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" is a message song about accepting that everyone is different. It is as it states - everyone is a little bit racist and once that fact is accepted, everyone will live in harmony. It is not a song about embracing everyone's differences.

Sueleen, I agree with you. I don't think that there are any excuses for racism. I don't think the song is funny, and I don't appreciate that people use it as a excuse for being racist. Now, I will say that racism is a part of everybody's life and I hope that awareness will change a lot of that. But not all racism is ignorance, and I know that I will always get snide remarks becuase... especially where I currently live.

I don't personally know of anyone who is racist because Avenue Q says it is ok to be so.

re: Anyone Else Sick of Q?

The show makes a clear distinction of the line between racist and "a little bit racist"
Princeton asking Kate Monster whether she's related to Trekkie Monster is an innocent mistake, thereby being "a little bit racist"
Kate's boss saying she failed at her job because of her race is blatant racism and Kate calls her out on it.
Racism is not cute, but neither is that a message in the show.

re: Anyone Else Sick of Q?

I'm not really offended by the song at all. I think it's actually pretty witty, however, racism is a very touchy issue and especially if you're on top of society's "pyramid", it's easy to take these sort of things lightly. It's a song, for entertainment, and should not be used as an excuse. But then again, you shouldn't be looking for an excuse in the first place. It's true that "everyone is a little bit racist", but it's human nature to be judgemental and put yourself higher than others.

This is my signature.

re: Anyone Else Sick of Q?

It is human nature to be leery of things that aren't normal to you. I find nothing wrong with any race, but i think that extremist are stupid. I mean everyone is different. Color of skin is just more noticeable. I don't think that avenue q prmotes racism, they just accept it. And by except it i mean the examples that they use in the song. I think it is ok to think what you think as long as it doesn't effect anyone else. I however am not racist, and have friends of every race. I think that this whole thing is just stupid, and people should get over it.
