Anyone here done legal proofreading in Manhattan?

I did it, and here's my experience. I learned the skill at a short course given at a private home by a woman proofreader.

After that, I registered at a few temp agencies. I believe it was at that point you could select the shifts you were interested in. The very late shifts pay the highest, and it goes down from there. You could certainly work during the hours you prefer, but it may be necessary to sign up for at least 4 or more hours per shift. I haven't done this for several years, and things change.

It takes a while to become known at the agencies, but if you prove to be reliable, prompt, and skilled, they will start to call you more often. I guess I was good at proofreading because I started to get semi-permanent positions, weeklong assignments, etc. The same law firms start to request you.

I hope you enjoy the work, Evelyn! I did very much at first, but after a while, the many hours and piles and piles of proofreading became overwhelming to my eyes, and most of all, my ADD! I became too jumpy and impatient to sit for very long.

Please PM me if you have any questions!
