My roommate and myself will be moving to the NYC area in late May and are currently looking for possible apartments. Do any of you guys have any suggestions of where to look? (Remember, we're poor starving artists!
...)
Thanks in advance!
Joshie
P.S. - Any advice on getting my equity card?
Love,
Me
Look on craigslist.org!
Astoria (Queens) is one of the cheapest and best places to live.
As for Equity--you can only get it by either being offered an Equity contract or by earning points while working at Equity theatres--more info at http://www.actorsequity.org
Good luck!

I agree with JRB. Check out craigslist.com You might check Queens for Astoria & Long Island City.
Advice on getting equity card: Don't come to NYC to do it.
I would recommend looking for a place in Sunnyside Queens. I just bought a co-op there and i see that rents are relly great. i saw a 2 bedroom apt listed for $1200. Believe it or not, that is really good. And very close to mid-town.
I agree with the above, don't come to NYC looking for your card.

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. Do you think it would be beneficial to obtain an apartment broker or should we just look around ourselves??
Love,
Joshie
P.S. - As for the eqity card, someone mentioned to me that some kind of children's theatre/theatre for children in NY/New Jersey would be a good way to earn points. Any info. on this??

If you have a place to stay once you get here so you can find a place without a broker, i would do that. The one I saw was just on a flyer at a store. Or you can look on Craigslist.org too. A broker is just so much money. At least one month's rent just to them and then a security deposit of another month's rent. Boom, $3600! I hate give a month's rent to a broker just for finding you something when it is always possible to find it on your own.
As for the Equity card, plenty of people get theirs withThetare for young Audience tours. You audition here in the city and then go on a tour (assuming you get cast, i guess) for 3-6 moths in a van. I have never done it, but no plenty of people who have. It would be ideal to get a job like that before you get a place so that you can just live on the road for a few months and not pay rent for something you are not even living in.
Good luck.

Do you know how you are going to earn money while in NYC? A landlord will want to see that you have a steady income.
brokers in the city are vicious. if you are looking in suunnyside i recommend "welcome home" real estate. ask for carmela. i used her to get my apartment and she only charged one month rent as a fee. i've recommended several people to her and she's always come through for them.
Papa...
are you looking for a roommmate?
lol, erik, if you can cook, me and mrs. mambo might be open to the idea.

Also try Washington Heights. There are some very nice areas there and gorgeous steals of buildings. My friend has a two-bedroom that's about as big as my grandparent's house back in RI and he and his roommate pay 1200 a month (and that includes utilities).
Papa, I'm shocked, shocked to my foundation, that if you needed a kitchen wench, you didn't come to me first. What did you think I meant by "I'm Italian," I can drink my weight in red wine?
Well Papa...I cook a mean salmon. Maybe you and the misses would like to adopt a 31 year old gay liberal?
vishy, dear, mrs. mambo and i are still in negotiations about you, but it ain't gonna be the kitchen where your duties will be keeping you. wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
erik, mrs. mambo and i are going to take you out for drink and see if we can stand ya first, but i think we're still going for a puppy before a child. although the extra dependant might be peachy around tax time.

Will that get me my SAG card?
Well papa...I offer a lot more than a puppy, and I'm already housebroken...for the most part.

Will you still hump my leg?

Ron Bohmer's dog humped my leg, once. I had a friend in the chorus of the Scarlet Pimpernel tour and was waiting for him at the stage door. Bohmer comes out with this huge black lab which proceeds immediately to my right leg. It was intense.
Then my friend and I went to Cheesecake Factory. The End.
Carmella at Welcome Home realty found us our co-op too. I will see her tomorrow. She would freak out to know that she is on a message board! Funny.
try jersey. towns like hoboken, jersey city, and others are just 10/15 min bus and train ride away.
