Hey, I am planning to make the big move to NYC, and was wondering a few things.
1. Is Washington Heights a nice neighborhood? I notice on Cragslist they have cheaper studios and 1 bedrooms apartments. But I am not too familiar with Washington Heights.
2. Does anyone live in Astoria? Is it a nice place to reside?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Brooklyn! It's cheaper! There are trees! Plus when people ask where you live you can say Brooklyn!(In the Brooklyn accent which is difficult to convey on a message board.)
Yeah, when I moved here I started out hoping to find something in Manhattan, but then I moved on and found Brooklyn and am very happy with my decision!

Totally depends on where in Brooklyn- I mean, Park Slope is totally cute (too much of a Bugaboo crowd for me, but still cute, has the whole brownstones and trees and whatnot thing going on), but it's not cheap. When I first moved to NYC I lived in Brooklyn, in BedStuy, which was *way* cheap (roughly $525/month for two bedrooms in a six bedroom/2 bath apt, this was less than 2 yrs ago), but I did *not* love the neighborhood, and was not a fan of the transport- I lived off the G train, which does not go into Manhattan, any trip into the city required two trains, which was just a pain.

Posted: 2/18/07 at 7:30pmAstoria is a great neighborhood, and Manhattan is easily accessible from there (it's about 15 minutes from Astoria to Lexington Avenue on the E train). I considered moving there not long ago. However, it seems that it's becoming more and more popular, with lots of Manhattanites moving there, which usually means that rents will go up.

I lived in Astoria when I was in school and it could not have been more convenient. Two stops on the RR train and I was in Manhattan (59th Street and 3rd). Very nice neighborhood (2 block from Astoria Morion Pictures Studios) and the rent was a lot less than what I was paying in Manhattan. Of copurse that was a number of years ago and don't know how much it has changed since then.

Posted: 2/19/07 at 10:57amHmmmm, all of it sounds great. I've never lived in a Studio before, so I am nervous if Studios are alright or not. But wherever is a good neighborhood and nicely priced rent, I'll be happy.

Posted: 2/19/07 at 3:40pmAs far as Brooklyn goes, Park Slope has gotten very pricey, as has Williamsburg. The area below Prospect Park (Kensington, Ditmas Park, whatever you want to call it) is nice and still affordable. We're looking to buy there this year.

When I moved to the city about a year ago I considered Washington Heights until I got to the city and started apartment hunting up there. I didn't feel horribly comfortable in the area being a 20-something year old single female. I knew I wouldn't feel all the safe getting off the train at 2 AM after a night out with friends and walking home. However, there are more decent parts and only you can make the decision of living up there by taking a trip up and walking around.
I also considered Astoria and LOVED it. I actually ended up finding a rent stablized apartment on the UES, otherwise I would be an Astoria resident. Great neighborhood that has really convienent restuarants, etc. as well as a very easy commute into the city.

I'm paying a bit too much for my apartment right now, and I admit it!
But I live in Ditmars Astoria (the end of the line), and I really like it. It's just simple, no worries -- pretty quiet and nice.
