Wonderful news. John Goldwater deserves a big THANK YOU! It may not seem like much, but it's a pretty big deal.

Archie Comics is to introduce its first openly gay character in an upcoming issue of "Veronica".

The plotline involves a new character named Kevin Keller moving to Riverdale and catching the eye of the title role, who is unaware of his sexual orientation.

"The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive," said Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater.

"Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books."

Kevin Keller makes his debut in "Veronica" #202 in September.

This is very interesting! I remember the Christian editions of Archie in the 70s reminding you to tithe 10% of your wages.

This is kinda cool. I've been reading Archie comics since I was a little kid and, even though I'm much older now, I still like to read the new issues every month. It's awesome to see them introduce a character like this. Good for them!

As great as I think this is. I think what would be even better is a gay character in a Marvel or DC superhero comic. I do know that in the 80s there was a storyline of The Hulk that dealt with the AIDS crisis. However, I don't remember if the character in question (who ended up dying from AIDS) was gay or straight.

What a trip down memory lane! I actually owned many of those comic books. I used to pick up a stack of comic books at a garage sale or a used book store without going through them and discovering what they were later. I even had There's a New World Coming and God's Smuggler. Though I didn't know what propaganda was when I was 7 or 8 years old, I knew they made me feel very uncomfortable, like someone was attempting to access my brain via remote control. The GREAT SNATCH from There's New World Coming scared the crap out of me. It's probably why I'm gay.

According to the CEO of Archie Comics, response so far has been overwhelmingly positive, but (of course) many upset parents are canceling their kid's subscriptions to the Archie comic. There is also a movement to remove them from the grocery checkout aisle where young children can see them.

Reportedy, some parents are equally uncomfortable with the storyline in the current issue of ARCHIE...

This is so weird/cool. I loved Archie comics when I was little and I hope that this makes some kids reconsider their prejudices a little.

My guess is that this character gets phased out really quickly though. This seems like a very obvious publicity stunt.

How long before Reggie comes out? Any bets? I give it two weeks.

Gob, according to the CEO, there are already future stories being written for Kevin.

One of the local high schools in the county is being closed, so Riverdale High will have a lot of new students in the fall. Hopefuly Kevin will have his own version of the Archie-Veronica-Betty love triangle to deal with!
