Well, I wasn't at first but now Fort Worth ISD (I live in the DFW area in TX) has closed its ENTIRE school district until May 8th!!!!!!
That is a LONG time for a school district to be closed.

Not trying to be a scaremonger but i'm hearing from my nsg sources that this wave of flu will prob peter out in early summer BUT that a more virulent form will follow in the fall.
It might also be a good idea to stock up on non perishables like rice, powdered milk, powdered eggs, canned goods. But not in a paniclike way grabbing up everything in a store.
Oh and yes Cipro is def NOT OTC in Canada. Interestingly enough most pharmacies in both countries will fill scripts from Dr's from other countries. Just not restriced schedule drug like narcs or seditives.

I'm concerned but not seriously afraid. A person can't live their life in fear. There are germs out there and we can't live in a bubble. So I'm not reading too much into the "reports" the media is dishing out. I understand it's out there and I'm just trying to use my head. I spent a long time in retail and have become accustomed to being aware of how germs are spread. I sneeze on my shoulder or arm instead of my hands, I carry an anti-bacterial moisturizer, etc.
I think back to SARS, West Nile, and Bird Flu. The media had the country panicked but it was not as catesprophic as they made it seem. But the media coverage made people crazy. I remember being at a baseball game and someone was bitten by a mosquito. He turns to me and said "I think that one had West Nile". Seriously, you can tell by just looking at the bite?
With this latest one I got an email from someone ranting and raving about how the human race had this coming. She went on and on about how people shouldn't sneeze and cough. Whaaaat? When I asked what she suggested she stated that holding in a sneeze only burst a few capillaries and the damage would be minimal. Umm...don't we need those capillaries more than we need the sneeze? Coughing and sneezing are something we can't decide to not do. It's not the way our bodies are made. The media just brings out the crazy in people.

to clarify:
cipro is an antibiotic. it was used way back during the anthrax scare, as anthrax is caused by bacteria (bacillus anthracis). it is not helpful for viruses, which are the causative agents of SARS (coronavirus) or H1N1 (influenza).
nothing worked for SARS. which is actually true of the vast majority of viruses.
oseltamivir (tamiflu) is used for influenza. on average it makes you feel better one day earlier than if you took nothing at all.
the fall sounds a little early for antigenic drift to have occured. where is this information coming from?
