I am writing a persuasion paper for my English class. I have chosen to take the affirmative side on the issue of the importance of the fine arts in education.

I'm looking for smart opinions. I know why I believe that the arts are essential in a child's education, but I want to know whether or not you do.

So what do you say? Art the arts important in education? Why or why not?

Isn't the paper supposed to be what YOU think?

A large portion of the assignment involves research to find out how other people feel about your topic. I already have outlined my arguements.

I congratulate you on your choice of subject matter on a very important issue, especially given the arts have suffered in all the cut-backs in the school systems nation-wide.

I think teaching the arts is crucial to education. I know of many artists who docent in schools, particularly in depressed urban ones. It is sometimes the only opportunity for some of these kids to express themselves in a positive manner - or quite frankly just express themselves in a non-destructive manner. It helps them think in ways they never have before. It lets them know that there is beauty in life as well as pain.

It offers them a chance to see and do things they might not otherwise be exposed to. I have seen angry, hostile kids blossom in classes/programs like these. They often have never realized their own ability to be creative. Give them the opportunity and they'll grab onto it like a life-ring. It's balancing, and leads to a fuller life. I'm sure others here can weigh in on this subject in a more encouraging manner.

In other words, a definitive yes! to teaching art in schools.
