The best thing ever on DVD. Every movie they ever made together... plus a bonus disc.
I'm watching the Story of Irene & Vernon Castle right now. Such a wonderful, perfect musical film. Fred and Ginger are struggling right now as the young married couple in Paris... and Walter Brennan is there trying to help them out... and in walks Edna May Oliver as a rich old dowager... with that face of hers... and I'm in total heaven.
This is the best box set. These movies never cease to entertain me.

The real Vernon & Irene...
Astaire & Rogers as Vernon & Irene...
They were quite the trendsetters in their day.

Posted: 6/24/07 at 9:07pmI recently watched TOP HAT and thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the cases of mistaken identity. My local library has a Rogers & Astaire collection (albeit not the box set pictured above). I may just check out the rest.

Posted: 6/24/07 at 9:12pmIf I had to get rid of all but a couple of my DVD's, Swing Time would be one I'd keep. The music alone would make it tops, but the dancing, supporting characters, costumes, EVERYTHING makes it perfection!
A click for life.

You definitely should, SM2!
They may not change the world as we know it... but they might just entertain it for a couple of hours at a time.
It's easy to see why these movies were extremely popular during the Great Depression.

Posted: 6/24/07 at 9:18pmI forgot I've also seen SWING TIME, but that was over a year ago. Enjoyed it as well, though I cringed during the blackface sequence.

For SM2 and Mamie...
The poster art ALONE is perfection.

A product of their time, SM2.
With all good and bad connotations that raises, I agree.
Thankfully, most of it was good.

Posted: 6/24/07 at 9:32pmIt didn't ruin the movie for me, b12b. It was just a bit uncomfortable watching it through modern eyes. Anyway, "The Way You Look Tonight" has got to be one of the most beautiful songs.

I ordered the box set a few months ago and had it delivered to work. My co-workers were so jealous! Best box set ever! I watched all 10 in 4 days. And then I watched some of them again.

I got that for Christmas last year.
But a more important classic arrived in stores today:
Trog
Joan Crawford's last film.
I'm watching it tonight!

Posted: 6/26/07 at 10:11pmLOL glebb. it's part of a cult camp classics box set. There are actually 4 different sets. Trog is in the "women in peril" box.

Posted: 6/26/07 at 10:22pmI bought the Busby Berkeley and Fred and Ginger box sets a while back. For some reason I've been staying away from the Joan and Bette boxes. I guess I already own so many individuals of theirs any how. I'm looking forward to the Judy/Mickey Box because I'm in big love with GIRL CRAZY. I also would love it if 'When The Lion Roars' would come out on DVD.

I am absolutely getting the Mickey/Judy set.
The Joan box wasn't that great, but the Bette box is really good. I reccomend that one. They're doing a 2nd Bette box sometime later this year as well.
