I agree with that, though "Shall We Dance" is right up there.
"Swing Time" is great too. :) I've not seen "Flying Down To Rio" nor "The Gay Divorcee" in a long while. I hope Volume II comes out soon.
Glebb,
I've had Barkleys saved on my DVR because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the "drum number" they do and I will have to agree with you here..The color photography is not so good for Ginger. I thought she looked "odd" throughout, but couldn't (and still can't) put my finger on what it is!
My 7 year old niece loved the "drum number" as well...and I had to replay the "dancing shoes" number over and over for her as well.
Thanks justme2. I love your avatar btw.
It's still a pretty darn good picture. :)
ok Glebb, TCM is playing Barkleys of Broadway again and I am watching it again. I think I know now what bothers me about how Ginger looks in this movie.
It's the bright orange lipstick! It looks terrible on her and technicolor makes it look worse.
I just love Ginger in B&W. :)
Agreed!
Despite the heavy orange lipstick trauma, I watched it AGAIN (and it's still DVR'd) and thoroughly enjoyed the "drum number", et al.
ahhhh...I love when TCM shows actual classic movies.
Must order the collection. Must order the collection!

Oh my God, I NEED this collection. There's something so comforting about curling up and watchin an Astaire/Rogers movie. You have no choice but to feel happy during and after! Where's the best price on these?
Bump.
Bump...but backwards--and in heels!
Ginger is beautiful in heels. :)
God I love it.
Okay, Glebby--which dance are they doing?
Waltz in Swing Time?
Oh PalJoey, I was in the studio all day teaching Nutcracker steps. Please let me relax. I'm not as good as I used to be.
"Cheek to Cheek."
But "Waltz in Swingtime" is exquisite.
That was one of my guesses.
It pains me not to have the kind of recall I used to.
You can tell by the dress. This is the "Waltz in Swing Time" dress:
This is also "Waltz in Swing Time"--pretty similar dresses, no?
They look like you leaping through the air, Glebby...
Isn't that the famous "feather" dress that drove Fred crazy?
Glebb, what kind of extras are available on this set (yes, I have yet to buy it..)?
There was also a dress made of metal or something similar that Fred did like. I saw a special years ago that showed the sleeve hit Fred's face in slow motion. They said that Ginger refused to change the dress and it made Fred mad.
It's been a few weeks since I've watched any of the DVDs from the box set so I'll have to check on the extras. I'm pretty sure there are some.
As for the feather dress I'm recalling the end of 'The Purple Rose of Cairo' and can see this dress in 'Cheek To Cheek'.
I remember hearing Fred talk about that dress. It was a metallic mesh and he said that one time she swung around and the sleeve hit him so hard in the side of the head that it gave him a mild concussion. I don't remember him saying anything about Ginger insisting on wearing the dress. In fact, I don't believe she had a whole lot of say in those films. Fred was boss.
A special about Ginger Rogers on TCM @ 8pm Eastern tonight.
Do I have to fake a relapse to stay home and watch?
Oh! Meet Me in St. Louis is on right now!
