Audition Songs

Hi, I need to prepare a lot of audition songs, not only for college, but also for auditions. The only thing is, a lot of the songs that I do are all "Don'ts" as I have heard. I am a high soprano with a belt, and I have a 3 range octave. Currently a lot of songs that I have down are songs from Beauty and the Beast (Home and A change in me) and Phantom (Think of me, Wishing), and Les Miz(On my own). I know that you should not do songs like these for auditions. Once at an audition though for a broadway workshop when I was 13 I did On my own and I got it though thats why I am confused. Does anyone have any suggestions for songs that would be good for a voice like mine, they can be ballads or up-tempo. And does anyone have any suggestions about doing these types of songs? Thanks so much, sorry for such a long message!

re: Audition Songs

you are actually really lucky to be a high soprano. You can try songs from Wicked,Glinda's part

re: Audition Songs

Oo. Yeah. Definitely. They'll kill for that one.

Please don't. It's a horrible idea to do songs from currently running Broadway shows. Also, it's a 3-octave range...not 3 range octave...that's a bit weird to think about actually...

You might want to look into "No One Knows Who I Am" from Jekyll and Hyde. It's not a soprano song, but it should be within your range.

re: Audition Songs

Your voice sounds almost exactly like mine. I recommend:

Caberet and Maybe This Time-Caberet
'Til There Was You-Music Man
How could I Ever Know-Secret Garden
Summertime(normal key of can be taken down an octave and done in a belt)-Porgy and Bess
Hey, Look Me Over-Wildcat
My Ship-Lady in The Dark
I'll know-Guys and Dolls
Much More-The Fantastics
Shy-Once Upon A Mattress
Unexpected Song-Song and Dance
Down in the Depths (On the Ninetienth Floor)-Red, Hot, and Blue!

and definately avoid songs from shows that are running or very recently closed. Sometimes they will still accept you, but your chances are better if you do something they haven't heard five million times that day.

re: Audition Songs

Go the the musicals.net miscellaneous forum and go to the audition thread. i compiled a long list of do's and don't's and audition songs for every range and type.

re: Audition Songs

Maybe This Time for a high soprano? Are you kidding me? Maybe This Time is for altos/low altos. It goes down to an E (or a D, probably an E). The highest note is a C (as in the C above middle C).

Songs for high sopranos...I dunno, try Green Finch and Linnet Bird or Glitter and Be Gay.

re: Audition Songs

If you're a high soprano, I'll be quite easy to find a song that not a lot of people will use. Just look through a bunch of musicals written before 1960, they will most always have a high soprano ingenue with a song that you could use.

One really pretty song is "If I Loved You" from Carousel.

re: Audition Songs

I am a high soprano with a range of 3 and a half or so octaves with a belt, which is about how she described her voice, and that song is very good for my voice. I suggested it because it worked for me, just suggesting it doesn't make it ironclad for her. If you have a large range and are singing more than one song, it is a good idea to show it off.

re: Audition Songs

Ok, something I just realized. I intended on using Green Finch and Linnet Bird for my college auditions this coming year. Then, I realized, Sweeney Todd is opening on Broadway this fall. Should I choose a new song or would it be alright if I stuck with this one?

re: Audition Songs

I don't know...Sondheim stuff is touchy to begin with. If you're auditioning for CCM, I don't think they allow Sondheim's material.

DO NOT attempt songs obviously created for mature characters ("I'm Still Here," "Send in the Clowns," "Fifty Percent," "Rose's Turn" and almost any Sondheim song.)

So..I discourage the idea, especially since Sweeney is opening ANYWAY. If it's not too much trouble, I might suggest a different song.

re: Audition Songs

the bad thing about being a high soprano, like me, is that you have to stick (a lot of times) to classical Broadway. but if you find anything by Kristen, that would probably work...it's right around the break in my voice, but if you have a clear break, I say go for it. and for the record, not trying to be mean, just trying to help, it's a "3 octave range" not a "3 range octave." sorry, just helping! :)

re: Audition Songs

Well, Aigoo, Johanna is not a mature character... she's literally perfect for our age... But I really can't think of many songs that are in the same type of range to show off what I have. I have a belting song and I need a legit high song... What else is there? Yeah... there's Glitter and Be Gay... which will just involve buying more music... gaaaa...

re: Audition Songs

For all you Sonheim fans....I have heard that there is a great production of Sweeney Todd which is coming to The White Plains Performing Arts Center in White Plains, NY. The production is produced by The Helen Hayes Theater Company of Nyack, NY. Performances are August 11-14 2005 at 7pm.

re: Audition Songs

I would not reccommend doing On My Own, but it would definitely depend on the show you are auditioning for and the part you want. If I were you, I would probably learn a couple of different Broadway songs just so you can be prepared... I'm sure there are also songs you just know by heart anyway. Use the one that would best suit the part that you want, and audition with it... or if you're unsure of which song would fit the part you want to audition, ask us! :) we're always here

re: Audition Songs

How overdone is Corner Of The Sky? I'm thinking very but not sure...

re: Audition Songs

I would look at doing classic, "goledn era" broadway material as a positive. It's a good way to avoid doing something overdone, and they often carry a simple melody which I find really flatters a soprano voice.

re: Audition Songs

MrBungee - Would "Til There Was You" fit what you mean?
I now think I should have four songs prepared... if my voice isn't up to the belting or high notes, I can switch it up and not sing the song the girl in front of me sings...
So now I have "Blow Gabriel Blow" "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" (which I think I may still keep unless more people use their judgement and say I shouldn't) and then "Til There Was You."
What is something else I could use?? Hmm....

re: Audition Songs

but if you find anything by Kristen, that would probably work

I would say not. If Kristin does it, its very likely known for that reason. You want to avoid songs that are associated with a performer - especially Kristin, because her voice is so distinct.

re: Audition Songs

Yes, sopranos, our life it more difficult. Everything is being written for belters. But, as far as auditions go, go back to the Golden Age. Find some relatively unknown songs by the likes of Rogers, Hart, Hammerstien or someone like them. AND I reccomend the Musical Theatre Singers Anthology books. Yes, a lot of people have them, but there are SOOOO many songs in there that they are really great to own and learn from. Honestly, the best thing to do is find songs you haven't necessarily heard of. No auditioner wants to hear On My Own and Popular one more time.

re: Audition Songs

Yeah, you have to dig, but it'll pay off.

re: Audition Songs

Gah... I need one more belt-type song... you have to sing two songs at college auditions, right? And how much of the song do you sing?

re: Audition Songs

Check each school to see what they require. I would recommend making a small folder for each school with its specific requirements and the sheet music of each of your songs with appropriate cuts. Most schools will have you do a combination of 16 or 32 bars of each song (some do 16 ballad, 32 up-tempo, some do 32 both, some do 16 both, etc.) and some have you do entire songs. You will definitely need two songs, one ballad and one up-tempo, and I would recommend that they be quite different in style/range.

re: Audition Songs

i used "green finch and linnet bird" as one of my audition songs (i have the same type of voice as you....high lyric soprano, but also a high belt) - BUT ONLY WHEN WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BRING ACCOMPANIMENT ON TAPE (NYU does this). all other places i used "what good would the moon be" from street scene.

for my belty song, i used "shy" from once upon a matress and "danny kaminsky" from Danny&Sylvia (but don't try to get this one, it's not released. the composer is a family friend and he owed me a favor for saving his dog...but a song LIKE this one would work very well).

and i agree with everything ddtruitt said. in full.
