There are pleanty of great musical theater actors out there who are good, but just cant make the cut to get into the college
Is it fair that you have to be amazing to get anywhere?
OR is it the passion that should get you in?
Isnt the point to learn?
ME? I dont know.qui sait?
What is your stance?

ACTUALLY, I have heard of LOTS of girls (some that I knew) who were not very good and got into some very good schools. You have to make an impression, preferably, obviously, a good one. But often if there is potential, but maybe they are not at the level as others, the people running the audition see that.
A girl I did musicals with for 4 years...we did 2 shows a year together and everytime she got ensemble roles, and we had the same voice teacher, and I sat in on a couple of lessons since she was right before me...and honestly she was not BAD but she was NOTHING really special. She got into NYU/TISCH. And boy, did they shape her up after only one year.

My take on it is that schools are looking for people who are marketable. They have different type molds which they need people to fill. They are likely to pick for each type the most talented/those with the most potential to succeed and achieve greatness. Auditioners want to choose students who would both thrive the most in their school AND be the most marketable and potentially well-received in the professional world. I think it's understandable that schools would want the top-notch talent...so that they can make it even better and then put them out in the world with their school's name stamped on their talented forehead. This generates more interest for the school (when you see that so-and-so went to such-and-such a school).
This last bit is potentially considered "unfair," but...I think it's necessary.

Posted: 2/8/08 at 12:14pmYeah. But I personally, wouldn't consider that unfair in the least. College is a new level of competition. It's the reality of the theatre world. It's not high school anymore. That's harsh, but it has to be.

Posted: 2/8/08 at 1:30pmI think college auditions are a unique experience. Because they shouldn't be looking for you to be perfect, like casting directors do at all regular auditions. College audition people are looking for potential, and I think it could be hard to decide who has it and who doesn't. Sometimes you can't tell what someone's work ethic is until you've cast them, or admitted them to your school. I'm understudying in A Chorus Line at my local community theatre right now, and I think my director really wishes she had cast me on the line because I've been more dedicated than some of the people she has cast, and she knows I've got the talent. *shrug* It is what it is, and you just have to deal with it.

Smart musical theatre colleges won't accept the perfectly talented person who can already sing dance and act like a fiend. They want people who have amazing potential and who they can hopefully mold into a great performer.
Auditions are kind of like tests. You can do great on the class work and homework and bomb the test and you can be great in a full length show and great in class, but suck at auditions. I know for me, I can audition well, but callbacks and obviously full length shows are my thing. So...sometimes...auditions can suck hahah
I think it's definitely fair though. Just because you're passionate about something, doesn't mean you're good at it.

....this thread makes me bawl
Ever wanted something so bad but because of something out of your hands, you cant have it?
Theatre is all Ive ever wanted or cared for. And then the real world hit me, and I realised that most casting people are afraid to cast disabled actors.
Every day of my life, it breaks my heart.
And yes, I auditioned for a lot of colleges. No one was willing to take a chance. almost 3 years later, it still gets at me
