I am auditioning for Into the Woods with hope that I get cast as The Witch or the Bakers Wife, preferably The Witch... although I'd be happy as any of the female roles really cuz it's my favorite musical.
I need to audition with one ballad and one upbeat song and a monologue.
I have my monologue set up... it's a 2 minute comedic monologue that i am really comfortable with and have done before on multiple occasions.
I'm looking for a ballad and an upbeat song. What would you all recommend? I was considering to do "Children Will Listen" as a ballad and maybe something from Gypsy like "Some People" for an upbeat one... but you are all experts and I know can probably help me.
Thanks if you do.

Posted: 1/10/05 at 3:13pmbtw, i'm a 17 year old female who has a range of 3 notes less than 4 octaves. from a low d below middle c to a really high a 3 octaves above middle c. i am most comfortable singing mezzo and belting however but can sing a lot, from sondheim to pop and colocuturra (wow... definitely wrong spelling)

Posted: 1/10/05 at 4:21pmI know that it's not a good idea to sing a song from the show you're auditioning for because they then tend to have you pegged for that part and if they don't like it or had someone else in mind then they tend not to consider you for other parts in the show so I wouldn't sing "Children Will Listen". However, I've also been told that when auditioning for a Sondheim show it's a good idea to sing a Sondheim song but I dunno... I wish I could be of more help. I love INTO THE WOODS. I'm sending you good vibes...

Usually you wouldn't want to use a song from the show you are auditioning for, so maybe "Children Will Listen" wouldn't be the best choice (unless you do it REALLY well, then it could just make you a lock for the Witch, which isn't all that much of a bad thing for you).
Oh, and nice Sondheim reference with the bump lol

thanks. i have no idea what i should sing then... maybe "unexpected song" as the ballad and "some people" as upbeat? i know i should definitely include sondheim in one of them if not both. i feel like i could do "children will listen" really well, and i'm considering to maybe do "last midnight" as well instead? i know it's not usually a good idea to sing from the show... but i really fit criteria for The Witch.
any help would be fabulous.
yes... the reference had to be done timote.
thanks for the vibes, CATSNY

Posted: 1/10/05 at 7:10pmIf you're confident in the songs from the show, I don't think it could really be that bad to use them. I could be wrong though. Go with your gut.

Posted: 1/10/05 at 8:43pmI agree that "I'm not that Girl" could be good, although lots of people advise right now to steer clear of Wicked. It shows good range, though...

I feel like it doesn't show enough range for Into The Woods... or does it? i know that The Witch especially is a very strong singer type and needs a lot of umph in a way... i think.
what about Home or Unexpected Song or How Could I Ever Know or So in Love?

Is this a school show?
If so, I don't think singing one song from the show would be necesarily detrimental.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Posted: 1/11/05 at 12:22pmMy own 2 cents: I don't know if it's a school play or not, but from MY experience working with several directors: you shouldn't use Sondheim for an audition unless you can nail it; if you DO use Sondheim, try to steer clear from using a song from the same show (this is true for most auditions unless stated otherwise); music from shows like "Wicked" or "Rent" is seen by many directors as too "poppy".

This is not a school show but rather a JCC show.
So, what if I do: Not a Day Goes By and an upbeat like Some People? Or maybe Unexpected Song and Some People? I want at least one Sondheim- i'm addicted and it'll show that I can do it. Please help!!!! :)
