Awards season kicks off

NBR gave their best film prize to Mad Max:Fury Road.

I'm delighted about Jennifer Jason Leigh though. I think she's going to be the one to beat once the races start to clarify.

What reviews for "Joy" are you referring to?

Joy is getting mixed reviews. Which is good. It means I won't be tricked into seeing another crappy Russell-Lawrence-Cooper movie.

I thought Clouds of Sils Maria came out in 2014, no?

Anyway, I don't think the Martian deserves any kind of Academy recognition. It's fine, but not really great.

I'm surprised Anomalisa hasn't gotten more nominations as it looks really incredible. As of this year, I have over 100 films I still have to see, but the best movie of the year so far is Brooklyn.

Not in this country.

I can't believe I'm saying this (because I've never liked her), but I think Stewart absolutely deserves the awards she's getting. It's also the best movie of the year, in my opinion, but its chances of a Best Picture nom are slim.

I loved Brooklyn and Spotlight.

Crazy that Mara and Vikander are being submitted as supporting for their clearly lead performances in Carol and The Danish Girl. It's very likely they would be nominated as leads if they were so submitted. And voters might be annoyed to consider their performances as supporting because frankly it's a joke (although Vikander may well be nominated in supporting for Ex Machina). Note that the Golden Globes yesterday wisely vetoed their Carol and Danish Girl submissions as supporting. Even if these performances are nominated for supporting oscars, there's absolutely no clear probability of their winning (if that was the calculus). Not only might such nods be dismissed by many as blatant category frauds but they might also flounder by being nominated not only against each other but also against popular supporting work including Stewart and Leigh who have already won awards this season.

I can already smell the ratings disaster at this year's Oscars. I think exactly six people have heard of these movies up for the big trophies, and they're all posting on these threads.

We are not in the age of movies anymore, we are in the age of Private Screener Awards, given out for small films with small audience and a small group of voters who throw themselves a giant party and hope a giant audience will care or even know what they're looking at.

I miss the mix of critical and commercial successes. I miss Ghandi up against E.T. or The Sound of Music up against Darling. Or Star Wars up against Annie Hall.

We have a lot of little films and very few big ones. It's a different era because of the screeners and the way the voters watch films.

The Globe TV noms are suitably bizarre. I really liked Outlander but am surprised it's included (and that out of the leads, Sam Heughan was the only one excluded especially as he submitted his rape episodes) and nothing for Leftovers. Actually, Starz must have been very diligent with their screener discs since Flesh and Bone got two major noms (as I said in my post, the show was very watchable but was completely WTF crazy--but then so is Horror Story which they seem to just nominate on principle). Speaking of Horror Story I suspect Gaga, and Jamie Lee for Scream QUeens were both nominated just because they were "names" (thank God Eva Green finally got a nom for her amazing performance on Penny Dreadful though.) Since the Globes vote for best show based on a submission apparently of only *one* episode, I wish they'd say which episode was nominated--for many shows that makes a big difference.

Lady Gaga as a choice makes absolutely no sense, I mean come on.
