Not getting all the Hugo and Rango love. Hoping to see Melissa McCarthy on more lists, though.
And no love for HIGHER GROUND?
Come ON, people!
These awards are all over the place. No distinct frontrunner in many of the categories.

Special Citation (for underappreciated independent cinema):
The Mill and The Cross
Love that The Mill and the Cross is getting some recognition. It is definitely the most unique movies I have seen this year if just for the visual conception. Its distinction as a multi-national production in English, though very little dialogue, by a Polish director talking about Bruegel's painting put it almost in awards no man's land. I doubt its visual effects will get nominated over the more action-packed films or even its art house counterparts Tree of Life or Melancholia.
And I want to note that Jim Rash who co-adapted the screenplay for The Descendants plays Dean Pelton on Community. So I am pretty much going to pay too much extra attention to his category.

So happy to finally see Gary Oldman's name showing up! It also seems like the critics are waking up to Carey Mulligan for Shame as well. She should sing "New York, New York" to Fassbender at the Oscars and then turn around and accept the award.

"We Were Here"
Too bad the recent adaptation of Jane Eyre was forgotten so easily. I guess timing is everything. I thought it was gorgeous and was sure it would pick up a few nominations.
I need to see that one, Matt.
The movie I can't seem to get out of my head is "The Tree of Life."
I'm not even sure what to make of it, but there are so many indelible images ... and I think that's ultimately what the movie is. No more, no less.
An "art film" in the purest sense of the term. There is nothing traditional about its story-telling or characters. At first I struggled with it, while I was watching, and then I sort of just let it wash over me---almost like a "sense memory" exercise for actors. A fleeting image here, an emotional moment there, that eventually combine together and evoke a very strong, organic, visceral reaction.
I don't think it stands a snowflake's chance in Hell to win Best Pic. But I really hope it gets nominated. And I'm glad (and impressed) that Brad Pitt signed on to be a part of it. Good for him for going out on a limb. I'm sure many who read the script said, "WTF?"
"Good for him for going out on a limb."
Pun intended, right?
LOL, well, retroactively, YES!

I think I need to see "The Tree of Life" for myself with all of the nominations/awards it keeps getting. Heard some bad reviews but I should probably consider the sources.
Absolutely go see Tree of Life. Best12bars described the experience well, but I would add the one thing that makes crystal clear sense is how special an actress Jessica Chastain is.
If she gets nominated for The Help it will be because the Academy is too scared to go for the more daring film/performance that they fear will turn some folks off.
If I got to make the rules this year I would nominate the three boys together, like the Billy Elliot boys.

Thanks, SM2!
That's a great overview. You can definitely see in many cases clear frontrunners for critics awards. In other cases, it's all over the place.
Still, Oscar isn't a critics award (as we all know by now). And their voting is different. I find these "precursor" awards to be an indication of trends, but not of how the Academy will ultimately vote. Sometimes, they're not even close.
But it's nice to see some of these performances being recognized, regardless.
Finally saw Tree of Life and The Artist over the weekend. Didn't really care for Tree of Life. Felt like a film class on SYMBOLISM that was a prerequisite rather than an elective. I kept thinking, "Does this ever end???" The scenes from the 60s were the most interesting and the NatGeo special was pretty, but the whole thing was ridiculously heavy-handed and it didn't come together for me AT ALL.
Loved The Artist! I truly hope it walks away wit 6-7 Oscars including Best Picture. So far, my favorite film of 2011.
The Producers Guild of America (PGA) nominations are out today. They nominated 10 movies, while they Academy will nominate somewhere between 5-10 for Best Picture.

Frankly, I don't understand all this love for "Bridesmaids." I liked it all right, but it wasn't anything to write home about. Is it 'cause they're women so the standards are not as high? IMO, "The Hangover" did it better. I found it more enjoyable and funnier. If Melissa McCarthy is seriously being considered for a Supporting nomination, then Zach Galifianakis deserved one, too. He was the highlight of his film. McCarthy was just her movie's version of the Galifianakis character. But it didn't even get a screenplay nod. Boo!
I'm a little surprised The Tree of Life didn't make the cut.
But then again, the movie is just too weird for many people. I still can't stop thinking about it (in a good way). But I'm sure there were enough guild producers out there scratching their heads as to how it ever got the green light.
I actually found the Tree of Life boring and pretentious.
Bummed that Drive wasn't on there.
