I wanted to get a quick refresher on Hall’s various controversies and foibles and discovered his Wikipedia is scrubbed clean of all of them. It’s now basically just an extremely embellished resume.

Considering this has something like 60 performers attached, it’s safe to say you’re not getting the OBC performing the full show. These BCEFA concerts have usually tended to have different performers for every number.

Diggs did the reunion at the Festival in August and was… almost laughably unprepared. Hopefully he took a look at the script again for this Monday. Interestingly, the only OBC member skipping out on both reunions is Jesse L. Martin.

Is there actually that much explicit sampling or lifting of other work in the score or is the score merely derivative? There tends to be a habit of a pile-on of criticism in situations like this, throwing less substantiated criticisms in with legitimate ones.

That pricing structure would make sense in a big Broadway-sized house, but this is a 14-row, 300ish-seat off-Broadway space. They're all good viewing. To say nothing of $399 for this being absurd, as is the lowest price in the extension being $79-99 depending on the day. This is just an expensive boondoggle of a production.

Nearly all of the previously "sold out" performances have now released seats, ranging from a single seat to a quite a number of them.

Surprised we're seeing this again after how forgettable its Shed run was. Maybe they'll use the intervening time to make some much needed edits. Regardless, it will be a sure hot ticket and commanding high prices with Hanks.

Ticket sales are analyzed here all the time. And in the case of Midnight, it is deeply unusual for a show to cancel the first two weeks of its limited run because (allegedly) the production couldn't physically fit into the venue safely. That is not a normal thing that happens at this level. It is also very unusual for one person to serve as writer-composer, director, choreographer, lead producer, and star of a production... because it leads to things like a bloated 3-hour show that had to can...

The issue with Gen Z or younger targeted shows, as we have seen time and time again, is that it is hard to translate online hype to actual ticket sales.

It's just not the crazy in-demand hit it is being presented as and the wide availability of tickets in the "extension" (actually just the latter half of their intended and budgeted run) demonstrates that.

This isn’t an extension in response to demand. It was marketing tactic to create the illusion of demand. It was always going to be “extended” into January.

The Times and other major publications have been much slower to review off-Broadway in recent years outside of major celebrity or nonprofit productions (remember, Oh Mary’s Times review came out weeks after its official opening) and I imagine Midnight’s severely delayed start has pushed it even further down the priority list.

I’ve heard some murmurs about Dratch being part of the Oh Mary tour now that Ghee has had to withdraw but am not sure how much to that there is. But this production has certainly had a curious way of handling major cast departures.
