BBC reporting "thousands dead" in New Orleans...

"Hurricane Katrina is thought to have killed hundreds, probably thousands of people in New Orleans, the city's mayor, Ray Nagin, has said."

This is the first time I've seen such a large death toll mentioned. Let's hope it's a huge overestimate..

re: BBC reporting 'thousands dead' in New Orleans...

While most American news stations do tend to overstate things....I saw the most frightening images on CNN last night. This female reporter was on a boat, in the dark and they had a flash light of sorts. As they were passing homes, you could see the water up to the eaves, and people trapped in the attics were trying to force their hands, pieces of tinfoil, anything, out from under the eaves to get people's attention.

I imagine many of those people dies last night when the water rose. It made me heartsick to watch the video. The reporter kept saying..there's nothing we can do..and crying..it was terrible and perhaps CNN should not have shown it.

Sadly, I do not think this will prove to be an over statement. What those people are going through right now is pure hell with no end in site. It will only get worse in the coming weeks when the media pulls out and everyone in the rest of the country goes back to their daily routine not giving the poor people in the south a second thought.
PEACE.

I really had no idea it would be this bad. And wasn't it even supposed to be worse than this? Why couldn't those reporters have done anything? I mean, saving even one person would have been a victory.

1010 WINS Radio reported earlier today tha many people climbed to their attics for refuge. The water, however, rose above that level. It is feared that when the water subsides and the attics are serched, there will be hundreds of victims who are found drowned.

Imagine drowning in your attic? (Shivers)

sorrygrateful - Those reporters had nothing to chop through the roofs of the houses. And believe me...they were not just standing around watching the situation and commenting. They were trying.
