BEWITCHED vs. I DREAM OF JEANNIE

Which one's your fav?

I like BEWITCHED better because I think:

1) It was wittier

2) NO ONE could compete with a blustering Darrin ("SAM!")

3) LOVED that Gladys Kravitz!

M_E - I would also pick Bewitched, but primarily because of Elizabeth Montgomery and Agnes Moorehead. And that doesn't even get into the extraordinary talents of all those guest star aunts and uncles re: BEWITCHED vs. I DREAM OF JEANNIE

I would pick Bewitched.

besides, Jeannie is a direct rip off of Bewitched.

Agnes Moorehead, YES!

Who would've thought that a BRILLIANT character actress like her would wind up on BEWITCHED?

re: BEWITCHED vs. I DREAM OF JEANNIE

bg2,

I DREAM OF JEANNIE "ripped off" BEWITCHED?

Hmmm, let's see--

1) Both were about women with supernatural powers;

2) The men they lived with disapproved of her using those powers;

3) They both had "twin" relatives;

4) Both were orginally filmed in Black & White and then switched to Color;

5) Paul Lynde guest starred on both shows;

6) Both had their credits displayed in animation;

7) Both had theme songs with no lyrics.

Well, bg2, I never thought about this before, but I DO think you're on to something. Please keep us informed. . . :)

Please DON'T knock HAZEL, Dg.

That show was an INSPIRATION to housekeepers ALL ACROSS AMERICA!

(I loved the expression on Booth's face whenever "Mr. B" realized she had been RIGHT about the pressing issue on that episode and he was wrong!!!)

To further the comparisons (and bring them current), there is a big screen version of Bewitched filming right now, and one of Jeannie is in pre-production (to be directed by the person who directed Bend it Like Beckham.)

re: BEWITCHED vs. I DREAM OF JEANNIE

I have to vote for "Bewitched" too. I was always more intrigued by it when I was growing up, loved Elizabeth Montgomery and Agnes Moorehead, and always felt like they did more with the premise than "Jeannie". And when you catch the occasional Nick at Nite rerun, I still think that "Bewitched" holds up pretty well, while "Jeannie" is almost unwatchable.

"Bewitched" Lyrics

Bewitched, Bewitched,
You've got me in your spell!
Bewitched, Bewitched,
You know your craft so well!
Before I knew what I was doing,
I looked in your eyes,
And that brand of woo that you've been brewing
Took me by surprise.

You witch, you witch,
One thing is for sure:
That stuff you pitch
Just hasn't got a cure.
My heart was under lock and key,
But somehow it got unhitched.
I never thought that I could be had
But now I'm caught and I'm kinda glad
To be
Bewitched!

PalJoey,

I NEVER heard that before!

Were the lyrics actually ever sung in the show?
"I say YOU'RE the CUTEST one. No, I say YOU'RE the CUTEST One. And we go on like that from dawn to three."

re: BEWITCHED vs. I DREAM OF JEANNIE

I vote for Bewitched.

But, thought you might find the following interesting:

Were there any lyrics to the IDOJ theme song?

Yes, the song was written with lyrics. However, they were never used with the show.
Written by Buddy Kaye (music by Hugo Montenegro), the song was as follows:

"Jeannie, fresh as a daisy!
Just love how she obeys me, does things that just amaze me so.
She smiles. Presto! The rain goes.
She blinks. Up come the rainbows!
Cars stop, even the train goes slow...When she goes by!
She paints sunshine on every rafter, sprinkles the air with laughter. We're close as a quarter after three.
There's no one like Jeannie.
I'll introduce 'er to you, but it's no use, sir, 'cause my Jeannie's in love with me!"

I knew about the Bewitched lyrics, but not the Jeannie ones - who says BWW can't be educational?!

Do I win a date with Robbie Williams, too? (wink)

Addy and PalJoey,

I BOW to your SUPERIOR knowledge of theme song lyrics to 1960s sitcoms.

How are you two even AWARE that both theme songs had lyrics?

The posts of this morning presage a very good BWW.COM day. Too bad I've got to leave for work. re: BEWITCHED vs. I DREAM OF JEANNIE

Have fun friends and let me know about that date with Robbie Williams. :)

re: BEWITCHED vs. I DREAM OF JEANNIE

I think Bewitched was pretty much ripped off from ther Veronica Lake movie "I Married a Witch".

I prefered Betwitched because Jeannie was just so freakin' stupid. No matter how hot you look, stupidity is an automatic 2 point deduction.

re: BEWITCHED vs. I DREAM OF JEANNIE

Addy--I was going to say you win because knowing the lyrics to Jeannie trumps knowing the lyrics to Bewitched.

But I'm afrain Jon wins with a surprise Veronica Lake reference. Bravo, Jon!

For those too young to know Veronica Lake--she usually hid one eye with her voluptuous blonde locks. Rent Preston Sturges's "Sullivan's Travels" with Joel McCrae and see her in all her glory.

Thanks, Jon. "Ya big lug."
