BOY, do i have good timing. Pray for me!

So... i'm not at some fabulous theater at the moment. I'm a jewish man staying in a hotel (typing this) in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem (my friends pick.) Yassar Arafat is either dying/dead right now in a Paris hospital and the tension here is palpable. Suspicious *bang* sounds fill the air--firecrackers? I'm not sure. Wish me luck all--i hope to be back in NYC at my office desk on monday, making catty comments to all of you.

I'll keep you in my prayers. Do you have the number to the U.S. Embassy or know where it is? Can never be too cautious...

It's now 7:30 pm, and we're deciding whether to venture out, but DAMN those firecracker/gun noises are scary. Machine guns are everywhere, of course (the Israeli Defense Force.) This is relaxing!
However, the Muslims i've met have been beautiful. I refuse to stay in my hotel room all night. I need a good drink. Now if only Jerusalem had a good gay bar...

Shushan 4 is Jerusalem’s recently opened gay bar (and Jerusalem’s only gay establishment!), located (not surprisingly) on 4 Shushan St. (Shushan St. is a small street close to City Hall, tucked between Jaffa St. and Koresh St.) Open daily from 9 p.m.; closed on Sundays.

In Jerusalem, the gay scene is growing a bit more quietly. Shonka, at 1 Ha Soreg St. (tel. 02/625-7033) is Jerusalem's newest restaurant hit and stylish dance bar. Thursday night is gay night, which usually revs up midnight. The bar is good, and if you come early for a meal (before 10pm) the inventive Mediterranean Rim menu is excellent, though not cheap.

Midtown, I hope everything turns out okay. The gun noises are...sort of a fact of life. Gaza and the West Bank are places where things tend to go boom. Don't let the religious crazies (of any stripe) get you down. Unfortunately, you're kind of in their capital.

Comparitively. Now, the suburbs- those are safe. You don't hear about attacks on Ra'anana that often. :)

Yay! Where I lived. Only the occassional terrorist attack there, though we did have to keep our masks on for an awfully long time during the Gulf War.
