so i'm not sure whether this goes in the off-topic forum or not, but it still has stuff to do with singing and all that blah.
orthodontia..
fine they give you a perfect smile but i feel so self conscious in my braces
even though i have the clear ones.
and it gives me teeny lisp (but no one else notices it.. just me.. pfft) AND it makes me have to pronounce my words much clearer, and i end up with a mouth full of spit.
well anyways our school is having our auditions for our next musical soon and i have a feeling that my braces will lessen the chance of me getting the main role. can the audience actually see the... *cough* metal?!!!!
who else has/had braces?? its driving me nuts!

In the long run you will be SO SO HAPPY that you've had your braces even if it means possibly missing out on a lead role. Many many high school students have braces, though, so it's probably not even really that big of a deal.
Either way, just audition and see what happens. In 5 years having straight teeth with be SO much more important that whether or not you were a larger part in high school.
Let me just go ahead and say that braces should have absolutely no effect on high school musicals...especially clear ones. Theater at the school level is mostly about performance. Professional theaters can wait for the person who looks the way they want and do do that, but in school if you perform it right, there shouldn't be a problem. Trust me, you'll love what braces do for you =)

I had braces for my Junior and Senior years in High School, and I got leading roles both times. I'm pretty sure that they would pass up casting someone good just because they had braces. And let me say, I DIDN'T have the clear ones, I had full on metal with blue. Now THAT stands out :-P
(of course I changed the color to white when the show went on to make them less obvious).
I had the same problem. I had the lisp, but it goes away in a month or so. I still have the braces for about another month (YES!!!!!) and my only problem is certain positions my mouth has to go in either hurts or looks super awkward, but I don't have the clear kind, so you should be fine!!! =)
And I have silver to make it not obvious, I would do white but I heard they turn yellow??

ok thanks everyone! :)
i hope i can still get the lead part even though i have braces lol!
oohshizz: they only turn yellow if you eat curry or something similar which is staining. i haven't had any problem with them going yellow and if i do want curry, i usually eat curry the day before my appointment so then they can be changed soon (fyi they actually go FLUORESCENT yellow.. LOL)
and i hope my braces wont glisten or shine under the stage lights!!
i can't WAIT till i get my braces off. i think i still have one more year to go...
I had braces for almost nine years, I'm 17 and I JUST got them off.
IT WAS SO WORTH IT. My diction is 10,000 times better, and lets be honest, I'm prettier :). Seriously, you can't see them from the audience. And my advice is to stick to the clear.
Plus a year isn't that long. :)

hey dont even worry about that!
just work on your diction.. and dont get all desperate
its gonna take like a month or so for ur tongue to adjust to
the new guy in the house... so just relax
and practice some diction excercises...
like putting a pencil under ur tongue and trying to speak clearly
LOVED MY BRACES WHEN THEY CAME OUT ahaha
but seriously.. dont worry

i just got my braces put on in january, right around when everyone at school was getting theirs OFF. i am sixteen and i will be a junior in september. i go to a performing arts high school. and when i got my braces on i was terrified about not getting parts because lets face it when you've got enough equally talented kids auditioning for shows... you can afford to cast the better looking one. lol
HOWEVER. since i have gotten the braces i have been cast in 4 shows. one in which i had a featured singing role. and i got a lead (Cinderellas Prince/Wolf) in Into the Woods.
Also I can feel my diction and my placement while singing (and speaking) improving drastically. And a friend of mine said that it automatically gets better when the braces come off.
Oh! I forgot to mention I have the clear braces. A family member of mine came to see me in a show and didnt notice my braces until the meet and greet afterwords. A friend of mine who has been in two shows with me since January JUST noticed last week that I had braces.
So don't sweat it. you'll be fine.
pookiebear, good to hear! the lisp will be gone in no time =)
