BWW posts are public info on search engines

Someone just e-mailed me because he did a google search with my name. I realize that many of my reviews/interviews are picked up over the past 5 or 6 years of covering.
But I was not aware that BWW posts regardless of where you post them ; main board, off topic, regional boards are also
being picked up on major search engines. Not only is your post highlighted on google, but it links to the entire thread where your information was picked up.
It seems that if you or anyone uses any part of your name it automatically becomes placed in the data base on search engines.
Personally, I don't think this is such a cool thing especially because of how some people choose to express themselves and involve others, perhaps unknowingly. People that use screen names may not experience this. But those of us whose real names are used, by anyone, Eddie Varley, Corine Cohen, etc. may be surprised to find what I found. I would be aware of what you post, because it's all out there.
Here are just a few URL's that were sent to me that were picked up from the BWW "off topic" board. How they are labled from other regional BWW boards is beyond me.

I've known this for awhile. Sometimes I'll use google to find past posts that I don't have luck finding with BWWs search engine. But I do try BWWs first Rob. I promise! Don't smite me!

Not so cool if you have been extremely rude to others on the board. (Deservedly or not.) The person reading them doesn't necessarily know that. (Potentially an employer who has linked your name to your BWW sn somehow.) Trust me it is possible.
You wouldn't believe some of the stuff posted on other sites by BWW posters about other BWWers that I found. It could cause a BWW civil war. Well it might have caused one at the time.

Posted: 2/18/07 at 10:44pmIf you google wexy, there are posts from different forums that I belong to that go back to 2001. There's also a wexy on a Yorkshire terrier site, one on a butch-femme site and I found out that wexy is a white person that wants to be Mexican which is pretty goofy cause my white Mother was born in Mexico anyway.

It seems rather odd that PB ENT. would be concerned about this. After all, the woman has proven that she avidly seeks self-promotion.

papa~ apparently that's the case. But I was told a long while ago, that the off topic message board was not picked up by the major search engines.
And I agree, this may not matter to many here who post for fun and really could care less what's said or being said about them But this is not the case for others.

Posted: 2/18/07 at 10:52pma good rule of thumb is that if you post it to the internet in a place that is not password protected (and even if it is in some cases) that it's in the public domain and anyone can find it.

Yes, this isn't exactly news. Google constantly is indexing. I am sure that is how many of us ended up here to begin with.
That's also a good reason not to use your real name in posts or as your screen name, especially if you're going to say anything particularly nasty or incriminating.

Dolly~ self-promotion my pink butt. lol! A search would prove you seriously wrong. Half the posts involving my name "pati b, that's what her theater pals call her" are initiated by you my old shadow. Always trying to pull me into your pathetic little pit LOL! BWW's weekend marathon man.
While, I post a bunch of reviews and Press Releases and occassionally join in a topic mostly on the main board, I try to keep my contibutions supportive and low keyed, as many people know.
There are some of us who are not looking for a certain kind of attention, as was mentioned. That's all I'm saying. And if there's a way for these posts to be blocked from search engines, I know that I would be in favor of that.

I've repeated the "lecture" over and over that this is not a closed community - and just because someone isn't a member, doesn't mean they can't or don't read the message boards. I am still baffled by those that are surprised or worse, oblivious to the fact that what they post on a public forum not only can be read by anyone - but also lives forever in cyberspace.
p.s PB - google isn't doing anything but saving whoever is googling 1 step. For example, if google didn't return message boards posts, they would still be able to google your name and see you wrote here. Once on the site, they could easily search the site for your posts.
In other words - it's really six of one or half of another. And it's always been that way since day 1.

Posted: 2/18/07 at 11:25pmI didn't realize they were all out for public searches. I suppose that's how just about every message board is, though. I'm glad I use a screen name. The only thing that comes up when I google myself is the roster for my SHOTEL class from last semester.

This was fun.
I just went to GoogleBattle.com and pitted SticktoPriest versus MargoChanning (no spaces, as our screennames are).
The results?
Margo obviously won: 11,000 hits to 2,680.

Not if they employ the "no index, no follow" tag.

To be honest, I actually use google to find threads I can't find on this board than the search feature on BWW. Usually works if I can remember something someone else said.
Okay, I feel inadequate, because the only reason I come up when I type in "broadwayworld marlene" for the first 50 or so outcomes my profile and is rath's signature.

Craig, I appreciate your addressing this. But, I have information telling me that posts on the OT board are not picked up by search engines. This was a while back, but apparently that's not the case, because they pop up right away. No hunting involved.
Of course anyone can access BWW. I am just surprised that BWW board posts are the only posts that appear readily on the search engine despite the fact that I post on a few other theater message/ chat boards. I'm not saying they don't exsist, but I didn't see them.
As long as you all are aware that everything you say here or is said about you here is out there. That's all I'm saying.
BSOWBW2, give it up. No thanks. I'll pass.

RESULTS
MargoChanning BroadwayWorld VS. luvtheemcee broadwayworld
MargoChanning broadwayworld 9,950
luvtheemcee broadwayworld 14,800
Emcee wins! It would be fun to have a BWW Googe Battle off thread, but I think it goes more by number of posts than anything.
#23bww posts are public info on search engines
Posted: 2/18/07 at 11:53pmYeah, it would go by number of posts considering most people just call them Margo and em or emcee more than their full names.
