Love this film, so hounting. (On the late, late show last night..) Just another of many brilliant early 70s films I first saw in college and (liked), and then grew to LOVE over the decades, and never tire of watching, over and over and over again....
Other faves: The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon, The Parallax View, Mean Streets,,They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The Last Picture Show, Logan's Run, The Last Detail, Next Stop, Greenwich Village, Serpico.

Love me some BADLANDS -- easily Terrence Malick's best film. He was never able to quite scale these heights again, was he? I'm particularly impressed with Sissy Spacek's narration, such a wonderful device that Malick puts to such fascinating use, both supporting and satirically commenting on the action, as opposed to the narration that got so cloying in later works like THIN RED LINE and the unfortunate TREE OF LIFE.
My favorite Martin Sheen performance. Those big blue eyes, man oh man.

This thread makes me want to listen to Springsteen's Nebraska album now. Brilliant film, one of the best debuts for an American director.
They Shoot Horses, Don't They? was actually a '69 release but whatever, great (but incredibly depressing) film.

Yes, strummer, and Jane Fonda's first real breakout flick ...("horses"). Ooh, that last scene! So glad it wasn't a happy ending. My dad used to dance in those marathons during the depression when he was a teenager.
BTW, speaking of BADLANDS, didn't Woody Allen use the name of "Starkweather" in his film "Take the Money and Run"?
Thanks for liking my list. "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" was on TCM tonight - I guess they're reading my mind! Loooooved Harvey Keitel playing COMPLETElY against type in this film!
The entire lineup tonight is based on girls' names. I love TCM.

Yes tinymagic that last tragic scene in HORSES packs a wallop. I remember the first time I saw it, I didn't know what hit me.
It *was* Jane Fonda's first real breakthrough role and the one that made her a contender. She received her first Oscar nod for it and it came right on the heels of....BARBARELLA (!)
Mad crush on Michael Sarrazin...he was so beautiful...RIP.
But back to Malick's BADLANDS, I don't think he's ever been able to top that film. Sissy met her husband on that film as well and they're still married after all these years.
