I think Barbra was overwhelmed being onstage with Merman AND Judy. One thought was going through her mind: "I'm onstage with Judy Garland and Ethel Merman. Holy f%%%king Sh!t."

As usual, Judy went out of her way to make Barbra comfortable. Even though the CBS brass told her that "she was touching her guests too much", Judy's all over Barbra like a mother hen. She's terrific with Barbra in the "tea Time ' segment (and yes, I know the dialogue by heart)

Judy: "You really...sing OUT. You really BELT a song. There are very few of us left."

Judy: "Do you smoke?"
Barbra: "No."
Judy: "Drink?"
Barbra: "No."
Judy: "nothing? You just SING beautifully..."
Barbra: "Oh, I do other things! Don't make me an innocent.."
(Judy breaks up at this)

Judy (to Ethel) "You want some tea?"
Ethel: "Nah, I'd rather have the SILVER!"

During the 'checked shirt' duet (right after Judy's "Happy Harvest" number, the two gals are really getting off on each other and Barbra really cuts loose, camping up and giggling after "Lover Come Back to Me" (which makes Judy roar with laughter) and when Judy shows the youngun how it's done by tearing into "You and the Night and the Music", Barbra squeals "oooooh!" in awe.

One book also claims that Judy took Barbra aside and told her "Don't let them do to you what they did to me."

The Judy Garland show was Barbras last appearance as a 'special guest star' on any early '60s TV variety show. She was supposed to appear with Bing Crosby on another show, but her manager, Marty Erlichman got her out of the deal, telling her, "You don't need to do any more of these shows. You've sung with Garland - you've sung with the best."

GREAT rundown, Master!

Just a spectacular moment in entertainment. Her BEWITCHED (and I may be hanged for this) is definitive. Her DOWN WITH LOVE is astounding. And that duet? The big one? It's historic.

But as for my favorite moment from The Judy Garland Show? June Allyson WASTED and badly lip-synching The Doodlin' Song...and the 'tea sequence' that follows is not to be believed.

I absolutely LOVE this episode. I agree about Barbra's BEWITCHED here being the definitive version - it blew me away the first time I heard it, and still does. I also really like their "Love Songs Medly"- beautiful.

I agree with baddadnpa, as well- Barbra didn't feel superior at all, in my opinion. If anything, she felt honored to be there and appreciative of the chance she was given. She is uncomfortable at first when she's singing with Judy and Ethel Merman, but if you look at her body language (which I have), you'll notice that it's not coming from a feeling of superiority but a strong sense of insecurity...She sorta backs out, even stops singing for a second, and then when she joins in again (cajoled by Judy - such a sweetheart!) she has to make it a joke, to hide her insecurity. That's my take on it.

I love 60's Barbra..But I also love 70's Barbra ("Lazy Afternoon", anyone?), 80's Barbra ("Yentl" is my favorite movie of all-times), 90's Barbra ( "Higher Ground" is sublime) and 2000's Barbra ("The Movie Album"). Yeah, I just love Barbra.

The Streisand Specials should start rolling out on DVD later this year. Hopefully they will also finally release Belle of 14th Street and Musical Instruments.

Her 5 specials are some of the finest hours of American television, with My Name Is Barbra, being of course the best.
