It's a SAG rule. If you speak at all in a production, you receive residuals. Sometimes they are very small (some of mine are as low as $.15) but you get them from the airing of the film, the selling of dvd's, etc.

Gravity cost $100m so I imagine Sandra and George Clooney took pay cuts to help get the film made but I imagine both were on good backends. Sandra also took a salary cut for The Blind Side but got a percentage of the gross and that film earned $200m at the box office.

Unless you're a big name actor or producer, you should go for percentage of the gross and not profits because Hollywood will screw you over, the writer of Forrest Gump was told by Paramount the film had lost money thus he wasn't able to claim any of the profits which is absurbed considering how huge a hit Forrest Gump was.

Oh, they'll try to screw you. On a commercial I once made, I signed a contract for $1500 if they used print or billboard ads. I saw ads in two newspapers and cut them out and saved them. I didn't receive the money and when my agent called the ad agency, they said they had decided not to go with print ads. I mean, really. Out and out lying.

I know this is TV which might be different bug Jessica Keenan Wynn of the upcoming musical Heathers appeared on an episode of Golden Girls as an infant. I once heard her say she still gets checks.

Mine was tv also (Sex & the City). Maybe there are different rules for infants?

This was before SAG and AFTRA merged. SAG rules applied for tv shows that were taped and not live.

Meryl Streep took $1 million upfront for "Mamma Mia" and ended up making over $40 million from her back end deal.

I think Daniel Craig for Skyfall got bonuses but not backend because the Brocollis don't offer it to their talent although he got $17m upfront. Didn't Pacino and Hanks get a percentage of the gross for Glengarry Glen Ross and Lucky Guy?

I once got 25 bucks out of a back end deal.

I can't believe it took almost over 24 hours for someone to make a "back-end" joke.

But you guys nailed it.

Jane - you haven't told us which episode of Sex and the City we should all rewatch tonight.

If you want to know, i'll tell you. Season 4, episode 2. "The real me.' when Carrie falls on the runway and Charlotte's vagina is depressed.

p.s. I was in about 30 episodes of SATC but this is the one where I spoke.

OMG. That description is amazing, Jane. Amazing. I didn't watch religiously, but I'm definitely firing up HBO GO tonight. Any other hints or do I need to watch the full ep?

BTW, how do online/streaming/on demand services work for actors? Do you get residuals from when people watch, the way musicians do when someone listens to their songs on Spotify or do they have to air on traditional television?
#40

Barkhad Abdi is broke

I don't even know those details but what I do know is that if the episode is shown somewhere, I get teensy residuals each time it's shown.

I also got paid for the board game "Scene It" because they used my scene in their game as a video.

ABC also used my scene when the girls went on Oprah to promo the show.

Sorry for all the questions. So do you get dozens of checks for ridiculously small amounts, or do they pool recently aired residuals into monthly checks?
#42

I get a separate check for each residual. I'm sure it cost more to print and mail the check when it's an 8 cent residual, for instance.
