My partner and I are going to DJ for a neighbors daughters Bat Mitzvah. Any ideas or suggestions about music/games....anything, because we have no idea. PM me if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks in advance, I really need help on this one?

I remember one held during the time when MEN IN BLACK was popular. They played the song and then gave out glasses to everyone.

There is a game we used to play at every bar/bat mitzvah. I'll be dam*ed if I remember.

It was like a partner running game. I think half the kids lined up on one side and half one the other. Then somehow they did a race- I don't remember the specifics though. haha

As for music, the family should give you songs they want you to play. That's what happened for all the kids in my family- the parents and the bar/bat mitzvah kids talks to the DJ and gives them a list of what songs to play.

Good luck!

The group I was with back in DC (over 10 years ago) used to do entertainment at Bar and Bat Mitzvah's.

The Electric Slide or other kind of line dances always kept them entertained for a while. Then again, that was over 10 years ago.

You should play the Friends theme song, Lean on Me, and That's What Friends are For. Those are all Bat Mitzvah classics.

It's not a Bat Mitzvah (or a Bar Mitzvah, for that matter) without a game of Coke and Pepsi.

There's a game I've played a couple of times where everyone forms a circle, you get close to the ground and make a table top form with your body, placing your head on the stomach of the person behind you. Everyone does it so the entire circle is connected. Then you see how long you can all stay like that, and once one person falls, it's like a domino effect as everyone else falls too.

There are the standard games:

Hula Hoop
Limbo
Simon Says (with the BM kid as Simon)
Musical Chairs
Coke and Pepsi (PM me for a desciption)

You can also do a fun quiz game. Have the BM girl write out trivia questions about herself. At various points during the reception, announce the game, and then read the question. First person with their hand up and the right answer wins!

The prizes for these games can be anything: CD's (either new or mixes made by the BM kid) small gift certificates, etc. Just make sure they're gender neutral.

The standard songs:

Hava Nagilah
Celebrate
Twist
Shout!
Footloose
Chicken Dance
Macarena (if people can stomach it)
Electic Slide
Cha-cha slide (not sure of the real name, annoying song where the announcer calls out what to do)
Sunrise Sunset (the BM girl should dance with her mom and dad)

As for other music:

Just like for a wedding, you need eating music and dancing music. Eating music should be quiet, with few words. Jazz and classical are best, but stuff like Sinatra, Buble.....you know the standards, are good.

For dancing music: let the BM kid (and parents--they shoudl get a few favorite songs too) write out a list of the songs they want. You can help them and their parents with censoring for lyrics (some parents are ok with "I Like Big Butts", some aren't) and differing tempos. Even if the kid doesn't give you enough songs for the whole event, you'll have an understanding of her likes to work off of, and you're sure to at least get her favorites in.

Hope this helps!

So tonight is the Bat Mitzvah that I am DJ-ing for. My last question is if I wear a black shirt and black pants I won't be breaking any rules/traditions will I? The evening is business casual. Is black ok to wear? I am being serious.

Black is fun, been to ones with everyone and the dancers being in black.

Its a fun bat mitzvah, although I thought it was inappropriate when they played "Push Push In The Bush" at a cousin's bat mitzvah.

Well probably too late now, but I was going to say definitely Coke and Pepsi as well.

In terms of songs, they always seemed to play YMCA (ironic), Celebration time come on,

There always seems to be some kind of Grease song, usually We Go Together.

Ooh, at one of my friend's Bat Mitzvah's, they had a name that TV theme song game, and then would have trivia questions about the shows. Looved that one. Pretty much because I got so many right, they started telling me to pick someone to get a prize because I already had enough. Ha.

Again this is now pointless so I guess I'll stop now.

Coke/Pepsi.

Red Light/Green Light.

Black is fine to wear. You're not breaking any rules.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and the wardrobe support. It's over and it turned out great. At the last minute before I left the house, I thought of the "Wicked" OBC, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. There were about 30 kids there and they all had a great time. I got a list of songs from Hannah (the celebrant) and made 3 cds that I could play throughout the evening and then gave her the cds after. She loved it.

You have no idea how much your ideas helped me and I thank you very much!
