Posted: 12/13/07 at 1:24amI think it suffers in comparison to Mary Poppins, but it's still pretty entertaining.

Rent it first. Then if you like it, buy it.
Oh, and Angela is delightful.

"How pleasant. Bobbing along, bobbing along"
"Eglintine, Eglintine! Oh how you shine! Your lot and my lot, have got to combine!"
"Substituciary Locomotion!"
And the lovely Portabello Road Ballet sequence and the finale! A wonderful fantasy film! With Angela Lansbury perfectly charming, and David Tomlinson also wonderful! Love it.

Love it!

"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!"

I enjoy the "full" release that's on DVD, but only AFTER seeing the cut-down American release, which was much tighter and didn't overwhelm.
The "full" release is WAY too long, clocking in at nearly 3 hours... for no real reason.
So, keep that in mind when you buy/rent the DVD... and you suddenly think to yourself "this is ENDLESS." The DVD is not the movie as released in the U.S.
Also, it's a bit weird because they found the visual film footage, but not the audio tracks for many of the restored scenes. As a result, other than Angela, everyone else is being dubbed by different actors! The guy who dubs for the Professor doesn't remotely sound like him either! Neither do the child dubbers. Very strange.
All that said, I LOVE the movie, and it's very enjoyable for Angela, the music, and the animated sequence, which is a lot of fun.
I also recommend the original book(s) if you get the chance.

having recently rented this from Netflix, it makes sense that this was not what i remembered seeing as a kid. it DOES seem endless.
i'd be up for reading the books, however. it's a very fun story :)

Posted: 12/13/07 at 1:58pmI loved this movie as a kid. The music is fantastic (such hummable songs aren't written anymore), Lansbury is always great, but it's the late David Tomlinson who made the movie.

I used to use "The Age of Not Believing" as my "not-a-love-song-but-I-want-to-show-sensitivity-through-a-ballad" audition song. Complete with key change for the last sixteen bars.
"There's something wonderfulllll, truly wonderfulll,
