I did a search on this topic but since the thread I found was well over two years old, I figured I'd start a new one.
It's a given that all of us here on BWW like showtunes but what else do you like to listen to?
I have diverse music tastes and on my Ipod I've got everything from rock to R&B, soul, oldies, techno and gospel. I also have a collection of classical, jazz, and symphonic music. And of course my beloved cast recordings. I don't really like country, though. Maybe I wasn't listening to the right artists, but I could never get into it.
My current non-theater obsession is Gym Class Heroes' album "The Quilt", and Sara Bareilles' "Love Song", both of which I can't stop playing.
Polka. And acid opera.
Ella, Etta, Frank, The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Queen, Brian Mcknight, Stevie Wonder, Marc Broussard, Shiny Toy Guns, Disturbed, Luther Vandross, Christina Aguilera, Dream Theater, Jill Scott, Muse, Guster, Oasis, Essex Greeen, Arctic Monkeys, Blue October, Regina Spektor, The Ditty Bops, The White Stripes, The Dresden Dolls, Raul Midon and many many many more
Spiderdj82, I love Blue October.
And best12bars, ain't nothin' wrong with polka!
I listen to a lot of different things. Hip Hop, R&B, Rock, Classical, even some Country. My favorite type of music is pop music. Lily Allen, La Roux, Calvin Harris, Ladyhawke, Little Boots, Annie, M.I.A., Girls Aloud, Lily Allen, Kate Nash, Frankmusik.
Jason Mraz is the Bob Dylan of his generation. He's a lot more than "I'm Yours", kids! Hyperbole? Listen to the 50 songs he's written that AREN'T on the studio albums. The label likes him one way, but Mr.A-Z is a whole other story. Best living lyricist besides Steve.

Oooh! Me likes this thread. I listen to a lot of alternative stuff (the kind of music that sounds like techno mixed with pop/rock) and I really enjoy Sublime and Green Day...but my favorite non-broadway group of all time is The Beatles.
ETA: Classical stuff as well
Oh, I LOVE Jason Mraz. His new album is outstanding
Pgenre, I agree with you about Jason Mraz. I haven't heard his other stuff, but I have all three of his albums and he has quite a way with words. And he writes great music as well.
I could be wrong, but didn't he also do theater at one point before he was 'discovered'? I could of sworn I read it somewhere.
I once went on a road trip with a friend and she said "I brought a lot of mellow stuff for you". I started to that I don't just like mellow music but then I realized she was on to something. I do tend to lean towards the "mellower" artists - Michael Buble, Shaun Barrowes, DMB, Linda Eder, the Coors. I also love Celtic music.
Right now...
Florence and The Machine's album has been on a lot, 'Cosmic Love' gives me goosebumps. Little Boots, Marina and the Diamonds, La Roux, Kanye West, Killers, Uffie, Lily Allen, Friendly Fires, Kate Nash, Imogen Heap...and I've been obsessing over Lady GaGa for a while. Just get enough of that lady.
Shoshana's album came on today. Keep neglecting how great some of those songs are...
^ I've heard a lot about Florence and the Machines. Are they worth checking out?
I love Dixieland Jazz.
I also love Sinatra, Bennett, Dinah Washington, Alberta Hunter and traditional blues.
... actually, very little. Out of the 600-some songs on my ipod, less than 100 are not from musicals. But I'm a big fan of the Beatles, Keane, Queen, Lemon Demon, and Weird Al Yankovic, and that's about it.
James and Spiderj, two of my favorite posters - figures you're Mrazmen!
I MUST tell you guys about his fan site. As I said, he understands the business which is why he has lasted so long so his studio albums are much more commercial than his other stuff. They don't like songs with titles like "10,000 Motherf*ckers" and "Cannib*s College", nor the content so those songs are relegated to concerts and live recordings only. He is totally cool with audios of his shows so there are, literally, thousands.
He will write an amazing musical someday that will reinvent the way a theatre score is written. And I will help him do it. At least that's my dream, :)
There are a couple of songs of his that as good as ANY musical theatre number and he often writes sequals and brings back motifs or little snippets in many songs, much like one of my favorite pop composers Jim Steinman (who does more blatent RECYCLING, but that's for another thread).
Some songs I'd particularly recommend to you guys because they have a certain theatrical storytelling or drama about them:
"Longest Day Of the Year"
"Galaxy"
"Personal Ads" duet with Bushwalla
"10,000 Motherf*ckers" and it's sequal,
"Childlike Wildlife"
and
"Miss Heather and Mister Grey"
"Catch Up To You"
"The Only Life You Can Save (Never Too Late)"
Those last 3 are my fav Mraz tracks of all time.

My taste in music ranges greatly. I can go from Indie Rock to Funk and soul. Just to name a few: Band of Horses, Minus the Bear, Katie Costello, Diana Krall, EWF, Stevie Wonder, Silversun Pickups, Uh Huh Her, Zero 7, Santogold, Sam Sparro, The Association, Vampire Weekend, Kanye West, The Blow, Citizen Cope, Esthero, Telepopmusik, Feist, Roisin Murphy, Missy Higgins, Psapp, Kings of Leon, Jamiroquai...
The list literally goes on & on.
Pgenre - It's not on Jason's album but on Raul Midon's album "State of Mind" there is a single called "Keep on Hoping" with Jason and it is AMAZING. One of my favorite songs right now.
Yes! I've loved that song for a few years now spiderj! So relaxing!

Just call me Spidey, since we are Mraz buds
I love Raul Midon's full album. Amazing work
Anything predating 1995! I'm all about rock, whether it be classic (the Stones, old Aerosmith, Springsteen), glam (Bowie, Sweet, New York Dolls, T.Rex), terrible 80's hair metal, or punk. I haven't really found any newer rock bands that do it for me aside from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Muse.
I have a special place in my heart for outlaw country, like Gram Parsons, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, etc., but I LOATHE modern country music.
I also love some electronic music...Goldfrapp is a favorite, along with Peaches, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, etc.
Yeah you're right, Spidey, great album. He's a true artist and I bet he's made a LOT more sales with Jason as a featured guest. He made at least one sale with me!
If you like that song than I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you seek out "Miss Heather and Mister Grey", "God Rests In Reason" and "Ray of Sunshine" (one of his newest songs that we know of, he wrote it a few months ago). They are in all in that vein, I'd say.
I can't recommend the Mrazstuff out there enough. According to his blog a live album is happening for his US tour which kicked off last week, so here's hoping we get official versions of some of these fantastic new tracks.
And why doesn't UGLY BETTY use the theme song he wrote? The Spanish version does!
