Prince puts on the greatest show I've ever seen -- singing, dancing, playing multiple instruments all incredibly.
David Bowie is pretty amazing as well.
Earth Wind & Fire and George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic put on a really fun show that feels like a party.
Nina Simone was hypnotic on stage, as is Jimmy Scott.
Fear sheer powerhouse vocalism, Jennifer Holliday and Patti Labelle are hard to beat.
And I saw Leontyne Price several times in the 80s and she was simply magnificent.

The best large arena shows have been John Mellencamp and Eric Clapton. Mellencamp puts on a good, fun rock and roll show that sounds terrific. Clapton can do no wrong in my opinion, so his shows have always been fabulous -- and when Buddy Guy joins him on stage, nothing gets better for me.
For smaller venues, Darden Smith and Peter Himmelman. Smith is a bit more folky, but it was a good, fun laid-back show with a man and his guitar. Himmelman is a riot -- makes up songs on the spot, etc.
And brdlwyr -- I saw Air Supply yesterday. They were at my place of employment. They sounded okay, but I'll still never admit to having the album back in high school (although I guess I just did
)

...oh yes, well there is that night I was onstage dancing in lewd fashion with Grace Jones back in 1977 too - But it was DURING the show so I suppose it still counts! Grace can crack a mean whip with a heart of gold!

I, am live music JUNKIE.
Modest Mouse/Broken Social Scene/Metric - Olympic Island - July 05'
It was a beautiful day, full of beautiful people and beautiful music.
Close runner-ups:
The Black Crowes - Austin City Limits Festival '05
Those guys can put on a DAMN good show, much better live than on their albums. It was an awesome crowd too. The only thing that killed it for me was the weather: extremely hot for this Canadian girl.

Oooh, let's see...
The first ones were amazing because they were super close seats:
-Elton John in Manchester, NH. FRONT ROW! My mom somehow managed to snag a pair of tix (for face, mind you) the day of the concert. We had no idea we were in the front row; we just saw Row A on the floor, section 3 (or something like that) so we figured we were in the front row of the tiers of sections farther back...NOPE! And we were on the side where Elton's piano was. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!!!
-U2 under the Brooklyn Bridge. A free, "surprise" concert. I camped out all day, and ended up less than 10 rows from the stage. An amazing concert. The crowd was fabulous, and the band was simple and rocking. I love the big production of the tour and all too, but it was great to just have the four of them on a small stage like that.
-U2 at MSG: 11-21-05. GA tix, ended up in the second row between Bono and Adam Clayton (smiles and eye contact glaore! FABULOUS!!!) A great concert all around. Patti Smith opened (her first ever show at MSG) and U2 closed with Bad!!!
Other great shows:
-REM at MSG. Their first concert after Bust was reelected. They opened the concert (for the first time ever) with It's the End of the World as We Know It. Rocking, emotional concert.
-Paul McCartney: Hartford 2002 and MSG 2005. He puts on one hell of a show!
My pair of noteworthy "just listened to" concerts (hanging out on the lawn at Central Park's Summer Stage)
-Jack Johnson: Absolutely GORGEOUS night, and there was just something really beautiful about laying in Central Park with a good friend looking up at the sky (and actually being able to see stars!) listening to Jack's mellow music)
-Arcade Fire: A sticky, sweltering day, but the crowd (even on the lawn outside) was SO into it. Everyone outside cheered like crazy after all the songs, and Bowie even joined them out on stage during the encore for Bowie's Queen Bitch. The was a huge roar from the crowd inside, then I had an Almost Famous "It's BOWWWWIIIEEEE!!!" moment as soon as he started to sing. GREAT! Closing with Wake Up was also amazing!
Eh, guess that's enough for now.

My very LAST *Nsync concert (in Chicago, their very last tour
...sadness!) --I had front row seats, and they all touched my hands! *lets out girly scream!*
O-town (in Rockford, also front row, lots of hot eye contact with the boys...nice)
(OH yeah...I WENT there with the boy bands...whatever you know you're jealous! lol)
Jason Mraz (in London just on Feb 21, 2006! not quite front row, but on the floor about 20 feet away from him!) but Jason is effing incredible...I *heart* him....

My Goddess!! I almost forgot I saw Peter Frampton do "Frampton Comes Alive" back in 1975 with Gary Wright the "Dream Weaver" opening up the show!! TOO GOOD!!
And there was Kenny Loggins in there back in 1977 as well! He & Stevie sang "Whenever I call you Friend"!!!

Green Day, Orlando, FL, April 2005
My friend got called up to play guitar during the "forming a band" segment of the concert!!! She played Billie Joe's guitar so well she got to keep it! That guitar's never left her sight and never been played since then.
What an amazing night!

This isn't going to be about a group you've ever heard of, or a performance you'll ever be told about.
Today I was working in the tech booth of our concert hall, recording a jazz ensemble that was playing there, when the power went out. Every thing went completely and totally pitch black- but the band played on. The amplified instruments didn't work anymore, but the piano and drums sure did, and nothing could stop them from singing or clapping by the light a few a cell phones. They kept things going for another 15 minutes, improvising without even seeing their instruments. And even though I spent most of that time scrambling for a fix, I thought that was pretty cool.
