Big stadium type concerts, the hands down winner is Madonna's Re-Invention Tour. Smaller concerts, I need to give honorable mention to the first time I saw Dar Williams a couple of years ago and to a recent Alison Moyet concert that was simply astonishing. But the winner is the second London date of Tori Amos's recent Original Sinsuality tour.
I always, where possible, see every London date she plays as her set list is different at every single performance, especially if she is solo. The first night in London was a very strange affair, very subdued and strained. I didn't really enjoy it and toyed with the idea of selling my ticket. I am eternally grateful I didn't and that I went to the second night. She was absolutely on fire and was joined on 4 songs by a gospel choir. It remains the most excited I have been by a live performance ever and I imagine it will do for some time.

I saw a John Fogerty concert at Hershey Stadium. It was awesome, one of the best I've ever been to.
I also went to an Eric Clapton concert at MSG. He is one of my absolute favorite blues/rock guitarists, and I'm glad I caught a performance of his. And I'm glad he did one of my favorite songs, "Wonderful Tonight," as well as the classic rock version of "Layla" that everybody knows and loves, because of the piano solo in the middle of this 7-minute epic. I love it so much.

Thank God for poppy.
I was reading these posts, thinking, "The Backstreet Boys?!?!?!" Good Lord.
For me, definitely Madonna's "Blonde Ambition" and "Re-Invention Tour." She knows how to put on a SHOW like no other.

I remember I wrote on my blog when reviewing Re-Invention:
"For the last 15 years, I have been convinced that Blond Ambition would remain Madonna's unassailable career peak as far as live performances go. Well tonight, Blond Ambition had its ass kicked all over town."

The Springsteen reunion show in Cleveland -- night 1.
The KISS reunion show -- 15th row dead center.
My favorite Bon Jovi show was the These Days tour ('95?) -- probably their best set that I've seen from them.
Iron Maiden and Queensryche a couple years back.
It's tough to top a good old GWAR show!

No surprise here given my avatar but Brian Wilson at The Royal Festival Hall London Feb 2004 at the unveiling of what is widely regarded as the Holy Grail of popular music...
It took Thirty Seven years for this piece to finally see the light of day. Had it come out as planned in 1967 it would have blown Beatles - Sgt Pepper out of the water...
The atmosphere was unbelievable, the concert indescribable. It's since gone to DVD but in no way replicates the live experience...

Posted: 2/24/06 at 2:45pmOh, yeah, I forgot. One of the best times I had at a concert was Madonna's Blond Ambition and especially because I got to leave with her in her limo. It's true, no one puts on a show like Madonna. She puts on the best "show" but she's not the best musician. For those, I already listed the Dead and Talking Heads.

DD---All day long I've been meaning to add a concert to my list.....and imagine my surprise when I saw your post on Lilith Fair!
The first year Lilith Fair started, I was working at a non-profit that had a ticketmaster outlet. When the listing for Lilith Fair first came out, I was thrilled to look at the line up for the one at Montage Mountain. It was not only Sarah McLachlan and Shawn Colvin, but Jewel, and Sheryl Crow, and the Indigo Girls! Imagine my shock when NO ONE showed up to buy tickets the day they went on sale! Apparently, the Lilith Fair buzz hadn't started yet.....Anyway, I legally (this time...LOL) bought tickets and ended up in the front row!
The show was amazing. Despite the on and off downpours throughout the day (the rain seemed to act as a bonding agent that day) Sheryl Crow was down in the press pit taking pictures when she wasn't performing. We had a wonderful time!

Keggss, I love that you have Pollyana as your avatar and Metallica as your best concert.
DG, my best concert ever was also Bette Midler...I had second-row seats (best seats I've ever had for any show) for the Experience The Divine Tour in Charlotte in '94, and it was thrilling.

Posted: 2/24/06 at 3:58pmI've seen The Moody Blues twice, once when I was in middle school ('94?) and once my senior year of high school (winter of '99). Those concerts made me a hardcore MB addict from then on. They did an incredible version of "Timothy Leary" in '99 that must have lasted twenty minutes. I thought I would faint at how good it was.

I forgot to mention Josh Groban in San Diego. The concert itself was good, but it was the energy of the crowd that qualifies it as one of the best concerts I've been to.
Thanks NCGuy!
